Another brilliant explanation, Dave. I am thinking of trying this at some future stage but I have some worries about the reamer. You have said that the pilot isn't long enough but is essential to keep the reamer aligned. I think you also mentioned you modified the pilot. Could I ask you to expand on this part of the process as clearly you were successful in reaming the two sides.

David - it was nothing too sophisticated. I took some tape, it was 'chrome' effect but electrical tape would work, and wound it around the end of the pilot until the pilot would just slide into the un-reamered bush. Then I used the tapered sleeve which normally goes over the pilot to keep it centralised on the way through. It's not dissimilar to using a taped dowel to centralise a clutch plate. It would be nice to turn down a metal tube to provide a proper solution, but I don't have the equipment for that!

Just a thought, and I may well be completely out of order! The alu protectors are very neat, but if they came loose or partially detached while driving, could they cause any problem with suspension, braking, or steering?

Nigel - The nuts are nyloc and with thread sealer. They can't drop as the lower edge of the guard overlaps the lower tube bracket. They can't lift because that would involve rotation against the gaiter, and there's no space. The U bolt is a perfect (interference) fit around the lower tube. I've had them on the Roadster for about 4 years and they haven't budged. It's no problem checking the nuts when greasing though! My main consideration was allowing enough clearance for the suspension on full rebound, and for that reason they are a bit shorter than I would like. thumbs

Dave- Why do you fit the alloy shields when you have such good fitting lower spring gaiters?
