In preparation for MOT checked all the lights and found that the fog light on my 4/4 sport wasn't working. It's a light I have never had to use. Checked the fuse - OK. Power to the fuse - OK. Had a look at one of the brake lights which , besides the earth lead, had two live wires; one I assume is for the brake lights in the dark and the other live when brakes are applied. Having no wiring diagram I am lost what to do next. Any suggestions welcome

The wires should be colour coded. I would check the earth on the fog light & if you have a mutli meter if power is going to the lamp.

Thanks John. The earth is ok because the brake lights are on when switched on for nighttime driving also they come on when the brakes are applied. Unfortunately I didn't state the year of my 4/4 sport which is 2009 and the GOMOG diagrams for 4/4 don't go to 2009.

Others are much more knowledgable than I on these later cars but just a couple of starting points for you:

In 1995 to 2005-ish era there was a relay that controlled the rear fog light , this was known as the infamous "spider" (not sure why , it didn't have 8 wires into it)
IF this is fitted to your car , then I would have a look at it as they do fail in service, I have had to replace one (also at MoT time)

I think the later Duratec +4s (and therefore probably the 4/4s) have a lighting control module (LCM) in the wiring behind the dash. This is quite a complex piece of kit, and it would probably be necessary to replace it with a known one and see if it works.

It will only work with the headlamps on. Have you tried this?

The bulb holder is not great either so it could be a failed bulb or a failed earth. The fact that the brake lights work doesn't mean that there might not be a fault of the fog light earth. It could be inside the holder.

Fog light on my 96 +8 was wired with a permanent live feed and switched through a relay, so if you have a power at the lamp could be they relay.

Checked earth at rear light with multimeter - OK

Had a look under the dash and saw a relay, fixed to the bulkhead, on the driver's side. Removed and gave the spade ends a clean, reinserted and "bingo" the fog light switch illuminated with the headlights on. Interesting the relay had been "Made in Tunisia".
