Hi I have a four seater 4/4 1982. I need to fit some seat belts in the rear. The bench style, when the hood is down leaves the rear passengers quite exposed. Has anyone fitted just a lap strap style belt, or a three point harness?
With a three point harness where would you attach the upper shoulder strap portion? I'm not sure if the wood where the hood is attached to would be strong enough. Any thoughts greatly appreciated Thanks

Had the same issue in my 1981 4/4 4 seater and had two lap belts fitted which kept my two sons more securely fastened without effecting their enjoyment of the car. Made a big difference to how I felt when driving four up and were also useful securing suitcases to the back seat. I didn't trust their safety to my DIY skills and had Mike Duncan fit them so no idea how he did it but if you talk to your local Morgan dealer they should be able to help.

In 1997, Dave Rutherford installed 3-point seat belts for the seats in the back of my 1983 4str 4/4. He mounted a metal frame (behind the spare wheel) that tied the connection of the seat belts to the chasis. For seat belts to be of any use, they need to be firmly connected, connecting to the wooden frame is unsafe. I have read on this forum that Dave has retired, but there must be dealers that can do something similar. Kind Regards, BertR

I have problems with shoulder harnesses in the Morgan. I am too tall, so the shoulder belt has to go up, then over my shoulder, then down. This irritates me so I have only lap belts in my more modern four wheelers. (I am sure harnesses are safer, but they just don't work for me.) The source I used for the lap belts is https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/ Reasonable prices and quick delivery here in the US. Don't know about the UK. Cheers,
Mark

Hello Farrmog, I have a 78 4 seater with rear seat belts. The shoulder strap portion is attached to a metal bar approx 2 inch wide 1/8 thick which is the width of the area behind the rear seat It is attached to the lower part of the wooden frame by the bolts that are part of the belt swivel mounting point so you will have to drill a couple of holes through the plate and then through the wood frame; the bolt then protrudes into the space behind the spare wheel where you can tighten the nut. the holes are about 6 inches from each end.The plate spreads the load so is quite sufficient for the wooden frame.Hope this makes sense. Harness bar is available from New Elms, Tim bought the rights to most of David Rutherford's engineering solutions. It's easy to fit and is not overly intrusive.
David's fibreglass moulds went to Sid Watson other than the roof mould which went to Mathias Kaulf (probably spelt wrong) in Germany.

Funny, isn't it - I remember being unrestrained in the back of what is now my car, in my teens. Apart from the "strain-the-bees-through-your-teeth" riding position with your head well above the windscreen, nobody batted an eyelid about safety. Now I regularly take my (admittedly somewhat younger) kids in the car, and would feel really uncomfortable doing so without some sort of restraint. I had lap belts installed, as I didn't like the mounting options for lap-and-shoulder belts.
Canadian regulations were not exactly crystal clear on the rules for installing belts in a car that did not have them fitted as standard: I am happy that they are securely fixed and provide a better solution than a complete lack of restraints, and that's good enough for me!
