There have been several people who have reported this problem, and I had it when I first fitted the throttle bodies to my Plus 4 which has the same exhaust system as the Plus 4 SS.

Firstly there is a problem with the exhaust in that it is difficult to get the cat up to operating temperature as it is a long way from the engine. My car has now been fitted with exhaust wrap which has the effect of preserving the heat to the cat.

My car has also been fitted with a 400 cell cat. This has helped a little too but has reduced mid range torque frown and has reduced the sound which I found a tad load smile

Finally careful tuning of the fuel map has now completely eliminated the problem.

Personally I would be very wary about changing the spark plugs. The plugs and gap specified are particular for the Mazda MX5 engine.

Below is my previous post on a related problem.

Omex did not design the exhaust manifold and catalyst either...........

Regarding the spark plugs; if anyone is using normal Duratec (Plus 4) spark plugs they will have serious issues as they are different lengths. The plugs fitted to Supersport were standard MX5 supplied by Mazda, I’m pretty sure Mazda know what plugs to fit!

However there is software that allows the dealer and owner enough access to setup the idle and TPS etc, this software was supplied to Morgan on CD for each car and should have been distributed with each car. Omex have that software if it is required but if you did not receive the CD with the car I would try to get a copy from Morgan. Naturally the first port of call should be the dealer from whom you purchased the car.

Omex are aware that there have been a few instances of the Supersport having an issue with MOT emissions and obviously they would like to find a solution. They will contact MMC to see if they are intending to do anything. However any solution Omex comes up with (unless of course the error is due to them) will have to be paid for by the owner and it will be up to them to take that up with MMC. However the cars are now three years old and out of warranty (a warranty that the customer agreed to by buying the vehicle) so it is probably not unreasonable for them to have some cost involved.

As an aside I am told that with a 200 cell cat it is quite usual to hold the engine at a higher RPM for a period before testing the emissions performance. This has no detrimental effect on anything and sometimes has to be done with normal production cars.

In my opinion, and I stress that it is only my opinion, Omex would be prepared to help if Morgan agreed and if approached in the correct way. My feeling is that this would be best handled through a dealer, such as, but not necessarily, Williams. Omex are perhaps better set up to deal with technical and experienced mechanics than they are with owners. They do support owners but would expect a certain level of technical expertise, availability of tools, etc. etc.

Would some form of rear splitter help manage the airflow to prevent the natural sucking in to the cabin picking up exhaust fumes?
Perhaps even a modified tailpipe with a downturn?
A shroud to mask the tailpipe or channel the slipstream to blow exhaust away?
Would an airdam at the front manage airflow under the car and help?
Whatever the mods to the Omex map there will always be fumes, so can they be managed by airflow improvement?

I spoke to Phil today and his opinion is that a good hard run has been effective on another car he knows of. I have also emailed with respect to the suggestion that the cat being remote from the exhaust manifold my not heat up sufficiently. This might be his thoughts with the good hard run theory

Phil thought that the oil catch tank system being sealed is not going to cause a problem.

Fitted Librands 90 degree pipe today with Demon Tweek's finisher as a side exit exhaust . The pipe size was the same as the box so a sleeve was welded to the right angle. This meant it is totally reversible.
Pleased to announce that the fume smell has gone. Result!!
Thanks to all re suggestions

Nice to know you have resolved the problem of the smell of fumes. It is possible that the base problem of emissions still remains. Do you have a friendly MOT tester that can do a trial emissions test for you before you have to do it for real?

In my old 4/4 4 str we used to offer the kids in the back the option of fumes or rain?

Always got home wet.

My Plus 4 SS went for its first MOT last month and if not for a friendly tester would have failed on emissions as feared, as I too experience the "fumes" issue, coupled with erratic tickover.
I spoke to OMEX to-day who confirmed, as I had been told by Techniques that the ecu for this model was not "re-mappable" (if thats the word!) by an aftermarket tuning firm and that I should go back to Morgan!
From previous dealings with the factory, I dont have a great deal of faith that the issues would be addressed and resolved without a great deal of hassle.
The car is fine to drive and I get over 30mpg overall driven hard.
Does anyone have a simple answer to this without paying loads of money for a new ecu.

I have cured the fumes issue by fitting a side exit exhaust. The right angle came from Librands and a finisher from Demon Tweek's. The only problem with fitting was the exhaust pipe and Librands item are the same size. It was easily solved by a simple weld to the new pipe of an external sleeve which fitted over the original. A few slices in the sleeve enabled the existing clamp to tighten it down. A small amount of aluminium had to be removed from the inner wheel arch for the new pipe to exit at a good angle!
I had no problems with the test certificate and have a steady tick over.

Check if you have at least one of the replaced ecu. They came in spring 2012. If I recall correctly this replaced ecu were marked with an orange or yellow sticker. But of course I don't know if the replacments can stand the MOT. The original ecu with which the cars were fitted first run much too fat. The replacement was free of costs at the time.

I have to add that the fumes were also existent with the replaced ecu.

If no one can help, perhaps it is a chance to ask the guys of frontline. The P4SS was a small and now closed series. The LE50 is a toy they have to take care about until today. May be they have some info or mods to cope the MOT.
