As per my earlier post on the other thread; they would have, or should have, also advised that the car should have been delivered with a program on a DVD that would allow a qualified dealer to make the basic adjustments.

The advice to go through your dealer of choice, or Morgan, to resolve the problem is correct. The mapping was developed for, and paid for by Morgan (the mapping and ECU were the only parts of the car supplied by Omex). As such the mapping, or better the calibration, is Morgan's proprietory property and they requested that parts of the ECU be password protected.

Omex is aware that some Plus 4 SS cars suffer from excessive fumes and emissions problems but they do not know why. It may just be a matter of correct adjustment or there may be variations in production by comparison to the prototype used for development.

It really is the case that Morgan needs to work with them to resolve the problem.

I do not have any relationship with Omex other than that as a customer for the throttle body kit I have fitted to my Plus 4.

ISTR that for this application, MMC used an ECU manufactured by MBE rather than Omex? In which case, if the car is out of warranty, then one option would be to get a new 9A4 ECU which is not locked down & a copy of the Easymap software, and get someone to do you a decent map.

If you buy from SBD Motorsport they'll do you an ECU with a basic map already configured, so it's not a question of starting completely from scratch. I found them extremely helpful when dealing with them - they supplied me with the CAN interface to the MBE ECU in my car, but I have no other relationship with them.

Admittedly, it's not a cheap way to go, the ECUs are around 700 quid and a decent rolling road with someone who knows what they are doing is going to cost c. 1,000 per day, but you'll get the map that you want

If it comes to that Omex can supply an ECU that is not locked and a calibration that has been done for the Mazda engine that they now sell. The calibration would have to be adjusted as the cam supplied by Morgan would be different to the Omex cam. I don't know, but I suspect, most Omex ECUs would be plug compatible with the Morgan wiring loom. Changing to an ECU from a different manufacturer is bound to involve much more than plug-and-play.

Morgan has a certain obligation in this and the more owners that insist the more likely it will be resolved. Firstly you need a copy of the diagnostics program on disk if you do not already have it, and secondly I would recommend that you find a Morgan dealer who is experienced with Omex units. The only one I know of is Williams but I am sure there are others.

PS. My car was fitted with the Plus 4 SS exhaust system from new at the factory. With the standard Plus 4 ECU it would have failed an emissions test, even after Morgan supplied exhaust wrap and a 400 cell cat. I have not had a gas analysis since I fitted the throttle bodies but I do know it is better because of the absense of fumes. I have done a lot of work on the calibration but would like to have some time on a rolling road to put on the finishing touches.

To my mind this points strongly to the Plus 4 SS exhaust system as a major contributor to emissions problems with the Plus 4 SS.

As always, just my opinion.

Indeed, my suggestion was based on the (possibly incorrect) belief that the ECU supplied by Omex for the +4SS was an MBE unit rather than their own device.

As with all these issues, the only real solution is lots of time on a rolling road, and full access to the mapping controls. This is greatly facilitated by having hardware knobs available to set the trim levels, otherwise it's hours of typing in new values.
