This arrangement may not suit your location, but on the MBGV8, there was a split connector on the main battery feed on the inside of the chassis leg. It was a simple threaded stud through a flat steel bracket, but insulated with a top hat (at each end) profile nylon bush. The flat steel bracket was then secured to the chassis with two captive studs and nuts, but also insulated with nylon bushes. The battery feed connectors were then covered with standard caps - as fitted to an old fashioned solenoid.
