Absolutely - a sports car can do without such luxuries as airbags, air-con, bluetooth, i-pod connectivity and a good sized boot.
OH COCK
What do I classify the Supersport as now?
Are we conflating a sports car (speed and handling) with a driving experience (enjoyment and a true experience regardless of outright speed) which I think I probably do far to often ?
I drove to the office in the Series 2 today. Top down all the way in varying degrees of light rain. A34 and M4 most of the way so I did not drop below 50 except at the A34/M4 junction. Arrived dry and with a huge smile on my face. Some people looked at me on the motorway as if I was mad (its a risk admittedly) but I just lauged all the way. Many others looked with such a big smile on their face. Funny how Mogs do that.
Sports car - engaging to drive not a mogadon on wheels. Feeling of wellbeing as you approach the car before the drive, anticipation and excitement. No desire to accept phonecalls if it rings - bluetooth or not. Total freedom of person expression and enjoyment.
The S2 is a sports car (goes like a stabbed rat if you want to) but is also just wonderful at relaxed speeds and gives you such a buzz. I think the modern +8 takes this even further with the styling ?
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
I was on a run with the S Wales Triumph club...my mate is sec. Got to the lights in Mumbles. The heavens opened. Hood was down... I put the umbrella up. Got a mix of laughs, stares, thumbs up from pedestrians, photos taken on smartphones... I carried on smiling. Dropped the brolly down and drove on when lights changed. I am amazed at the number of softtops that seem to have the hoods up permanently. Bought for show I think. Hood down on 3 scorching days a year and complaints about being hot in the sun! Nothing better than a winter drive wrapped up well...smiling at the onlookers who must think we are mad. We ( Morgan drivers) know we are mad!
To your original question: - Why do we buy Morgans?
My glib answer is simple: Because, well, just because. If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand and if you understand you wouldn't ask the question.
More logically, after reading all the posts here, particularly Alistair's, is that a Morgan is enough of a modern car, especially the Aero based ones, to be usable 95% of the time. It has enough technology to make the mechanical side reliable, and if ABS is fitted, reasonably safe. But it has nothing to seperate thedriver from being properly in control, and to allow him or her to suffer the consequences of stupidity.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a Morgan has "soul". Yes, they are all flawed to a degree, they are expensive, but they make their owners happy.

Simply by mistake. I wanted to get away from fast riding but keepeng the fun of motorized movement. I had the completely wrong impression the M3W would be a proper replacement for a Honda touring bike. The M3W makes lots of fun but it is wether convenient on long rides nor reliable enough for holiday trips. - But the 3Wheeler opened my mind for the Morgan philosophy of strange cars and nice people, so I had to get a Traditional and ended up with a beautiful 4/4. Love it! Did 5000miles in 3 month time. The M3W will be kept as a curiosity, for shorter fun rides and for hill climbes.

It never ever ceases to amaze me how mad people think we Re driving in the rain with the rood down and no one bats any eye lid if you walk down the street in the rain.
