Heater on my S1 is not responding to the control switch and is stuck at on making travel a little warm right now. During an otherwise fantastic three days cruising around the peak district, it did not help my cause when I told my better half that we couldn't drive with the windows half open because the glass might break. Any thoughts as to what might be amiss with the heater before I hand it over to a professional. Presumably something to do with valve control electrics? The heater fan is working fine, AC is showing yellow rather than the normal blue presumably because the heater is full on?
Very grateful for your thoughts please.

Thanks Taffy and Lightsphere. Now booked into Alan Claridge for next week, so will let you know what he finds.

I'm almost certain that this was mentioned in another thread about a year or so ago. If I recall there is an electrically operated valve that is part of the climate control system (ie. aircon and heater). It is a BMW part that is known to occasionally have problems.

Have you tried turning on the aircon?

Peter,
Yes have tried the aircon. I think I can hear the compressor working but the aircon dashboard light comes up flashing yellow rather than the usual blue. Maybe because it doesn't want to fight the heater?
Thanks will search previous threads

I may be teaching the granny here but the fan must be on for the air con to work if not your light will flash, also the airflow switch should be turned to the left before using air con or heater.

Also the air con on the s1 is pretty poor and there is considerable heat soak into the cabin. This wasn't fixed really until the new dash design in the s4.

I always found that the best cooling was via air con on with windows closed (and roof up). With windows even part open the air seemed to automatically draw through from the engine bay regardless of air con and fan settings making the cabin hot.

Aerotaff,
This granny is not proud and yes you have solved the Air Con question. Blower was off when I was trying the AC and it is now working (as well as can be expected). Still think the heater control valve may be stuck so Alan is taking a look next week.
Mr Tony,
we are having a BBQ tonight, maybe not need for the fire, just put the steaks in the footwell for a few minutes
