I don't think being concerned that the car might have a breakdown that leads to a serious injury means you should buy a Volvo!
I think we all accept the risks inherent in driving a 3 wheeled (and therefore much less stable) open car, with no roll protection, very little impact protection etc. But we don't want it to breakdown in such a place as to cause an awful incident!!
I've taken my kids in mine too, but wouldn't want to be in the outside lane of a motorway with them if one of many regular failures took place.
It's odd but the engine - oil issues, valves, drive-belts, fuel pressure, crankshaft bolts - seem to be more of a concern than anything else in terms of this reliability. I don't seem to be hearing anything like as much about bevel boxes which is great, and compensators seem to be less of an issue as do alternators and regulators - all GOOD! I definitely want the spacer amendment made to mine to help the belt cooling even if it is a ridiculous and imperfect 'solution'. Hey - roll on perfection!!!

Hmm, well I took both my granddaughters for a spin in mine. I wouldn't have done that if I considered it unsafe. The smaller one even went to sleep on the way back from Bude. usually ends up asleep if we drive for more that 30 minutes - and that's without a teddy bear to cuddle!

I have 2 concerns:- 1 a) Do we (or for that matter MMC) know for sure that the new built-in stiffener will cure the problem of fatigue cracking in the early chassis's once and for all? b) By the same token do we (or MMC) know for sure that the cracking problem is not going to manifest itself in the later chassis's? Unless extensive testing and/or computer simulation has been carried out by MMC (which I doubt), I believe both the above have not been around long enough (or covered enough miles) to prove they will be OK in the long term. A cracked chassis could result in the car swerving either into a ditch or into oncoming traffic. It's difficult to say if the solutions of MMC are safe on a long term. It's obvious that when they added the welded triangulation in 2014, they clearly know the problem of flexion and strength. Why hadn't they do the bolt on kit at that time?!!!... 2) My other concern is the high number of timing belt breakages (many at below 10,000 miles) when this would obviously bring the car to a halt with no warning. If this were to happen in the outside lane of a busy motoway the results could be disastrous. I would have thought that it would have been fairly straightforward to have the camshafts driven by spur gears which was common practice in the British motorcycle industry and lasted the life of the motorcycle. It may be a bit noisyer but this would have been a small price to pay for greatly increased reliability and safety. S&S would also not have incurred the costs and time required to develop the belt with Gates.
Whilst I have had tremendous pleasure completing the 9,000+ miles so far on my car, my pleasure is now turning the into trepidation at the prospect of one of the above bringing about my premature demise. And all this from a car for which we all paid a considerable amount of money, in good fath, from a reputable manufacturer, assuming all the bugs would have been ironed out before it went to market. There is a kit to fix up the problems encountered with the engine front pulley. I clearly disagree with the usual attitude of MMC for 2012/2013 model owners. Why don't they tell all the dealers to offer to do all these changes when any of these poor Three Wheeler come in there workshops. No, they prefer to keep their Policy of don't tell them anything and even deny there is any problem at all.

Because of this you drive no further than 30miles. Maybe you should reconsider the Volvo...

Grockle, thanks for your friendly and polite advice, although you're wrong about not having had any of the issues - just not some of the more catastrophic ones. I will ignore it (although I have nothing against Volvos) and please don't offer me any more of your excellent counsel.
Luckily for me, I have another Morgan that allows me to take much longer journeys than the M3W and has been generally very reliable over 8 years - an Aero 8 S3. See - I don't need the Volvo.

I'm just being informed by the dealer that during the repair of my faulty crankshaft seal he also did the upgrade on my frame. So the participants at the M3W Treffen next week having the chance to see the upgrade in real.
