I just noticed on Sunday that the window Frame (paint?) on my 4/4 is starting to react to something. It is bubbling, flaking and discoloured in places. Is this a reaction to another metal? Is it a common fault? Respray required or is it a more serious issue?

I recently fitted the new style rubber seals. I got one slightly in the wrong place and when I tried to reposition it nearly all the paint came off on the adhesive strip. I had to buy a roll of 20 metres of 3M double sided automotive tape to put it back on.

It seems to me that the aluminium needs to be abrasive blasted before coating to give a key for the attachment of the coating.

I fitted the new style rubber seal a while ago (fortunately getting it right first time!). They don't wrap round the side screens as well as they might as the screens seems to be set back too far from the windscreen support pillar.

Retro fitting the latest seals on older cars doesn't always work....the side screens on the latest cars are set up to clip into the seal when closing the doors, whilst on earlier cars, the widescreen fit can be quite variable.

The right hand side was perfect but on the left the sidescreen was too close to the pillar and trapped the rubber. That is the actual reason i removed it. Later I loosened off all the screws and exerted considerable force to push the sidescreen back as far as possible, then re-tightened the screws. I probably only gained a millimetre but it was enough. I also had to slightly adjust the bend in the sidescreen mounting support strips.

By the way I fitted the new rubber on top of the old strip which brought the outer edge of the rubber in line with the outer surface of the windscreen pillar. I trimmed away some of the old rubber at the bottom of the pillar and also trimmed a little of the inside angle of the new rubber at the bottom to bring it in flush at the outer surface, and finally trimmed the bottom where it protruded.

If it is made of aluminium a first coat of dedicated primer for aluminium is needed.

either way it a poor finish. Stainless would be better
