I've been thinking of installing the pertronix ignition kit in my '61 DHC. This is a triumph engine with the 25D distributor. The only thing holding me back is that electronic ignition wasn't on a '61 Morgan. Would I be spoiling the originality of the car?

I fitted electric ignition to all my MGBs. Apart from the box of tricks it looked standard and even in Concours was never mentioned. I would just do it. It should give better starting and running and can be reversed if you need to.

I agree.. I had it fitted to my TR.. Never had to touch it .. Originality can be overrated and in my view has to be balanced with reliability if you intend using the car.

I've heard lots of good things about improving starting with the Petronix. Lately the car has been hard to start from cold.

They're are kits that show no outwards sign of modification. I have one such kit in mine. Unless you undo the distributer cap you never could tell....and they're great.

Assuming you are still on the original points from 1961, then yes you would be spoiling the originality of the car. Some will tell you that it could be reversed, but then they wouldn't be factory installed anymore, would they? I do hope you haven't already spoiled the originality by putting high-carbon-content modern air in your tires.
Always remember that the definition of a pedant is someone whose standards of originality are higher than your own.

I've been using 1961 bottled air that I heat up prior to putting it in the car ;-)

Almost all +4s in regular use have modified parts in some form or other.
Electronic ignition is a good idea, and as others have said it should be more reliable than points. However I would ensure that you carry the wiring diagram around with you, just in case you want to work on it away from home, points are understood by almost any service depot, electronic ignition systems less so.

points are understood by almost any service depot, electronic ignition systems less so. Only if the mechanic is over 45 years of age. The younger guys just want somewhere to plug in the code reader. eddie
