A while back the starter on my 3 Wheeler had begun to “hang” when starting the engine. A few seconds after the engine was up and running it would disengage and all was normal. Yesterday when I had stopped to add fuel, the starter would not engage, just a spinning whine sound from the starter, but no starter engagement to turn engine over. Could hear solenoid trying to engage but no starter action. Starter would not engage the flywheel. Battery is good and wiring is good. I suspect that the pinion gear that engages the flywheel has been damaged and is not engaging or the spring has been dislodged or damaged. Machine is out for the count until this can be diagnosed and corrected. Can the starter be removed WITHOUT removing the engine? Thoughts and comments are much appreciated.

cycle through the settings while running and check the voltage coming off the engine. If it's below 12 volts while running then the rectifier is toast and you are running off the battery. If it's above 14 volts at speed then it is probably the solenoid.
The starter is visible from the front so I would guess that it is removable. I hope. I could be wrong. This car has thrown me a few curves...
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

Replaced rectifier a couple of weeks ago with H-D unit, runs 14+ volts now; so I know it is not the rectifier. I looked at the starter location and it looks like the steering rack is blocking starter removal, but it would be nice to have confirmation as to what is required before tearing into it.

We just lifted out the whole S&S and transmission to change out the compensator, clutch pack and clutch slave. To get to the starter you do need to get the steering rack out. I do think that at that point you can get the starter out.
See my pull engine post If you need some more info call me (561) 441-0199

I had this problem and found the starter not engaging Traced problem to the battery which is not maintainance free and had to be topped up with distilled water Jump the car with a good battery to prove the point before trying to get the starter out I also found my charging system was only putting in 11.5 volts not 13+ Battery up grade which is 50% more power is made by VARTA and the no is 540 126 033 3132 They are handed to the position of the plus terminal Left or right Also with the correct charging voltage found the engine ran much better

Just a side clarification here: You're saying she died in the gas station, you were stranded? What did you do?
