I owned a 4/4 LM62 for a short time .One of its many faults was a fan that was on permanently after engine had warmed up.I was told this was an unfortunate characteristic of the car. Regards Gerry ( now a happy Plus 4 owner)

Can't a fan be switched by a simple sensor rather than via the ECU?

Probably, unless it upsets the ECU if the fan motor is disconnected. My Gilbern had no sensor, so I invested in a conical hole cutter, and made a hole in the radiator header tank big enough to take a late spec MGB fan sensor. This worked well, but it was a risky job making a 3/4 hole in the rad!!!!! You can see it here...........

I can see that I may end up replacing back the 'faulty relay' and wait and see if it gets too hot again. I have to admit it overheated on the hottest day (32C) in UK and I had a rally plaque on the front grille so everything stacked against it. It certainly hadn't complained previous to this...
And I am sure it will be annoying...at least I have an option now.
We will see..

Bump!
Found this thread and thought I'd ask if anyone has found a solution, because it describes exactly what was happening to my 2005 Zetec 4/4 last summer.
On a hot day, once engine fully warm, the fan was on continuously while moving, only stopping when the car was stationary. Temp on the gauge showing 100-110 deg, no more.
I was blaming this on local underbonnet heat since changing to a 4-2-1 s/s manifold (Librands), with heat from the manifold heating the water pipes, which run above it. My plan was to insulate the manifold and /or the water pipes. Or even change to a bigger (Mulfab) radiator. But now I wonder if its an electronic problem?

Nigel My 2003 - 4/4 has a 1.8 Zetec and the only two issues I have had with it in 33,000 miles are needing to replace the fan relay (I now carry a spare) and the dash control module (that started to fault at 12,000 miles resulting in faulty warning lights and insrument readings) The fan only comes in when the engine gets hot (usually in traffic) despite the car having reduced louvres. I do ensure that I keep the radiator matrix clear of dead flies and muck and I don't have a mesh radiator grille. PM me if you need any more details

Does anyone know the Bosch the part number for the fan relay? My understanding is that the Hella number is 4RA 933 332-15.
