I heard on the radio today that around 400people have returned to this country from fighting in Syria with ISIS.
I understood that the government had said that these people would be considered terrorists and would be arrested on their return. Very few are in custody. ISIS would not allow these people to leave Syria out of the kindness of their heart so they must all be viewed as potential threats.
I despair at the government and its desire not to offend the Muslim community. I agree with some of the other comments, moderate Muslims are not a problem although I'd be happier if they integrated into our society fully. But religious fundamentalism, be it Muslim, Christian, Jewish or whatever, is the biggest threat to us all and I think we are entering into a particularly dark period.

Quite so, it's too easy to forget that by far the main victims of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism are Muslims. The Muslims with whom I work on a daily basis are just as shocked, saddened and fearful as a result of such terrorist attacks as we are.

It's tragic when events like we have seen in Brussels happen, not least because it's on our own doorstep, but let us not be deluded by the media and their agendas into thinking the Western World is under threat from Islamification.

In the USA in 2015, more people were killed by toddlers than by terrorists.

A bleak outlook.

I agree - EU Human Rights, Schengen .... all there for the liberal hand wringers to smile about. Meanwhile they create huge loopholes (that cannot be legally closed) for these cowards to exploit.

Modern PC values can't combat a medieval fanatic.

This is liberalism and unfortunately sometimes it may be necessary to fight for it. It should never be wishy-washy!

Liberalism is an ideology, philosophical view, and political tradition which holds that liberty is the primary political value. Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought.

Broadly speaking, contemporary liberalism emphasizes individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, free public education, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected. In modern society, liberals favor a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed. . .

Liberalism rejected many foundational assumptions which dominated most earlier theories of government, such as the Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, and established religion. Fundamental human rights that all liberals support include the right to life, liberty, and property. Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought, with adherents spanning a large part of the political spectrum.

Absolutely. And yet somehow the term has been hi-jacked by the political right as being a pejorative. Go figure, as they say...

I never thought that I would write something like this.

The security services and police are overwhelmed with the volume of possible terrorist suspects. It is not just a fiscal problem but the lack of trained operatives and officers to deal with it.

Has the time come perhaps to reintroduce rigorous border controls, inconvenient but necessary perhaps.

Also has the time come to consider internment camps? I accept that innocent people may be caught in it but place in the camps those who are of interest to those who are trying to protect us?

It is perhaps time to throw out some of our societies PC values and ignore some Human rights to try and start containing these fanatics who are only interested in hurting those who oppose their narrow ideology.

Pete

The cause of this is driven by the convergence of the Internet/Social Media, and freedom of movement of people and of goods. i.e. Guns and explosive materials.

The internet is 'impossible' to control, but is a reasonable source of intelligence.

Freedom of movement is controllable but needs investment and manpower. I'm afraid our politicians and the EC brigade don't seem to have the will to deal with this yet.
People movement would be easier to block than movement of freight.

But then there would be a huge cost to airlines and shipping companies - with further consequences.

There was a thought provoking documentary on ITV last night called 'Exposure: Saudi Arabia Uncovered'. It's just under one hour long and available on ITV Catch Up if anyone is interested.
