I`m behind the doctors - I suspect that that Hunt is trying to force a collapse and then say the NHS is not working and so he will be "forced" to privatise it by the back door. Or am I just a cynical old git. THey are now trying it on with my old profession and forcing acedamisation of schools.Nicky Morgan is just a clone of that imbecile Gove. I wish she would change her surname as I don`t want to be seen to support her by having her name on the car or my Mog clothing!!

Totally agree with everything said how come those senior management in both the NHS and Education have no idea of how to run them like Junior Drs teachers are flexing their striking arms if I was still teaching I would no out and ar the barricades !

My wife has worked in the NHS for over 30 years as a nurse and then midwife, so we know the situation and sympathise with the junior doctors, but (and this is just to move the discussion on, so please don't flame me.  ) Is it right that hospitals should close down over the weekend? I'm exaggerating of course, but if you go to our local hospital, Addenbrooks in Cambridge (normally 5,000 + staff working) the car parks are empty as there are no clinics, opps, etc. with many patients waiting for Monday. I work in a garden centre and I have had to accept working weekends, usually one on, one off, so that we can be open 7 days a week. Surely its just as important to keep hospitals working 7 days a week? So how can this happen in a fair way, well imo the junior docs should accept a contract that means they are obliged to work when the employers requires their services, even if its during a weekend with I agree is unsociable, but its also important, imo that junior docs don't work any more hours than they are contracted for, so if the service is short staffed its ultimately up to the government to find more doctors. Doesn't that sound fair? Thats my take on it anyway.

I recollect that in the 60s the government had a go at the GPs (so what's new) about something or other. The GPs gave the BMA their signed but undated resignations. The BMA waved these at the government and it caved in. This would be a better way ahead rather than striking and potentially harming patients. However, the biggest harm is not the risk to life and limb in A&E departments, but the consequences of cancelled operations and outpatient procedures.
I am a retired GP, or, as I prefer to have been known, family doctor, and nothing would have persuaded me to strike, but I would certainly have been prepared to resign.

The strike is about the forced impositions and new contracts being made without any form of consent by the whim of a government who believe they know better than the hospital managers. Hospitals have always had issues with consultants cancelling ops at short notice due to a higher paid job in the private sector, usually funded by the BUPA style of insurance policies. It's about getting the people within the system to work in a coherent system, it's not about peoples refusals to work unsocial hours. Junior doctors have always been the subject of such working practice abuse over the years, and they should be respected by Hunt, not pilloried and scoffed at. This isn't management, this is dictatorship and nothing at all to do with improving patient care. Don't be fooled.

I think the junior doctors are out of line. They are being given a 11% pay rise. They say that they already work weekends so what are they troubled about - loosing overtime payments? In many organisations new contracts are imposed.
