It seems reasonable to me that front line medical staff should expect to work weekends as part of their normal routine providing they have a fair uplift in basic pay and conditions.
Millions of other workers in far less critical and lower status roles have had to adapt.
Doctors have been operating (no pun intended) a restricted practice by receiving higher pay or time off at weekends using their union muscle for decades to defer reform.
If they continued with the higher weekend pay rates, trusts would avoid weekend cover to save money thus maintaining the status quo.

I am "now" totally against the junior doctors and their strikes!! I am also disgusted at their duplicitous picket line banners. They have the right to strike but at least be honest about it!. All this crap about "patient safety, privatise the NHS". The only unresolved issue is premium payments for Saturdays and they already have an offer for Saturday payments which is better than Nurses, paramedics etc. They have a 13% pay rise, reduced maximum hours, reduced consecutive long days allowed.If Hunt were to give in on the "last" issue, all the issues of safety would miraculously disappear! What price patient safety when they all p*ss of on strike! They have reduced their honoured profession to just another job. It will be shop stewards on each ward soon. The strikers must have taken the "Hypocrite Oath not the Hippocratic Oath". BMA also offer all their staff private health care!!PS My daughter is a very senior nurse in the NHS and her views are not dissimilar.As you can tell I am quite relaxed about it.

"The terms include an average basic salary increase of 13.5 per cent. Doctors would receive time plus 30 per cent for any hours worked between 5pm-9pm on Saturday and 7am-9pm on Sunday, while those working at least one in four Saturdays would receive a pay premium of 30 per cent for all Saturday hours. Three quarters of doctors would receive a take home pay rise, the Health Secretary says."
Seems reasonable to me - ask the steelworkers if they would accept it!

The battle today. Senior doctors are saving lives. And, somewhere in Whitehall, spin doctors are eagerly searching for a death to exploit.

Having taken my drink outside and walked around the Malvern Arms car park admiring the Morgans ( It's freezing out there! ) I come back inside to note that this topic is still active. Yes indeed as usual it's all about money and greed - nothing at all to do with "save our NHS" or patient safety.

Yes indeed as usual it's all about money and greed - nothing at all to do with "save our NHS" or patient safety. I'd add it is mostly about power, the BMA has it and Whitehall wants it.

I rather liked the first paragraph of Frankie Boyle's piece in the Guardian today
One of the worst things for doctors must be that, after seven years of study and then another decade of continuing professional exams, patients come in telling them they’re wrong after spending 20 minutes on Google. So imagine how doctors must feel about Jeremy Hunt, who hasn’t even had the decency to go on the internet.
