Probably not. But what's to stop a US healthcare company employing barely-qualified doctors from a third country, paying them rock-bottom wages and foisting them on us on the basis that they could be employed in the US, therefore they have to be employed over here?

If you are completely confident that American standards are at least as good as those in the UK, then you probably wouldn't mind, but if you feel that the UK ought to be responsible for defining who can and cannot practice medicine in this country, then you may feel differently.

I haven't read the TTIP, but I would be very surprised if TTIP allowed US healthcare companies to employ non American authorised doctors in the UK .. it doesn't make sense, and the US wouldn't allow UK companies to do the same. There has to be some equivalence.

Having said all that, I think US qualified doctors would be acceptable in the UK. Again, I don't see many wanting to come to the UK.

It's not the equivalence that bothers me, it's the idea that we sacrifice our sovereignty to corporate rather than political structures.

I agree - which is why, given the apparent enthusiasm our government has for rolling over to acquiesce to anything the Americans want, I think we should remain in the EU.

If we haven't got the bottle to stand up to TTIP, at least our European compatriots might.

I would agree that objection to TTIP come primarily from the political left (with UKIP as a notable exception).

Given that TTIP is mainly about enabling corporate capitalism unfettered access to markets by driving down regulation to the lowest common denominators, it is hardly surprising that the Conservatives and centrist Labour are in favour of it- most politicians will be aiming for comfy directorships in the benefiting corporations when they retire.

The main concerns about TTIP are about the use of the secret courts of ISDS, and the use of 'regulatory cooperation' to drive down controls and standards to the lowest level:

Oh dear! I have heard of TTIP but know bugger all about it - had a look at the beeb link and my eyes glazed.

I have enough to worry about without allocating any of my finite and dwindling supply of nuerons to it.

I will leave you guys who are interested in it and know all about it to sort out.

One query - dont know why Obama is in favour, if it is mainly not liked by the left - anyways.
