You just learn your vehicle.

Not that this matters, but keep in mind the shape of some car tanks. They tend to be wider at the top and get smaller near the bottom.

So from a physical height centerline there is "usually" more volume in the top centerline up portion of the tank than the bottom portion of the tank.

I wonder if the reason they use the short sender is because it gets you to fill up at 0% when there is around half a tank of fuel. Running a long sender gets you to run the fuel lower which can burn out the fuel pump as it relies on the fuel to keep it cool. The fuel pump manufacturer says that one cause of premature pump failure is consistently running low fule levels and burning out the pump which looses cooling. I feel there is possibly another cause of pump failure lurking in there having just had a holiday totally ruined by a pump failure leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Really sorry to hear about your breakdown - I feel your pain. I had never heard of fuel pump overheating so I searched the internet for Landrover fuel pump problems - came across this on FuelPumps.com:

'Frequently running your vehicle on a low gas tank is extremely bad for your fuel pump and fuel system components. On many vehicles, approximately 10-15 times the amount of fuel your fuel pump sends towards your engine gets sent back to your fuel tank. This helps cool down your fuel components and the fuel in your gas tank. By running on a low gas tank, the fuel in the gas tank heats up a lot quicker causing the fuel pump to overheat or even worse, run dry. Avoid leaving your gas tank low whenever possible. This is very crucial during the first few weeks after a new fuel pump install. A new fuel pump should be installed into a a minimum of half a tank full of gas.'

Personally I am a bit anxious about this issue because, while I now feel that my car is dependable, I reckon that fuel pump failure is likely at some stage. Does anyone have any ideas regarding the use of an alternative, more robust pump?

Fuel pumps are cooled by fuel. 99.8% certain this has nothing to do with MMCs poor choice in sender length.

Has anyone ever fitted an out of tank remote or in line fuel pump?

I thought the fuel pumps were actually out of the tanks and attached behind the passenger's bulkhead above the shock mounting area. I could be wrong though... frown

That's the location of the fuel filter the pump is immersed in the right hand tank.

I just pulled up the parts book showing the pump going inside the right tank.

I stand corrected, thanks.

Problems with the fuel sender/pump unit.
My Saab 900 has something very similar insofar as the sender is immersed in the fuel tank.
I usually run the the tank on the low side and this does not give me any problems.
The fuel pump only runs to maintain pressure, it does not run continually.

So, reports of fuel pumps over heating would give me grave concern. Hot pump hot fuel, not a good combination.
I have read on one of the suppliers websites that excess fuel is returned to the tank. I don`t think so.
If there is only one fuel hose from the sender unit then this is not so. You will need 2 hoses, flow and return.

Most of the problems you are reporting seem to be because of bad connections.
Also, i wonder if the resistance of the current unit has been checked. 0 to 75 ohms - full to empty seems to be the order of the day.

There is an earlier post in this thread with info on the VDO set up procedure.
I am just wondering if they have been factory set, or just fitted?

I would expect they are pre set by VDO and just fitted by the factory.
