My son lives/works in Zurich past 3 years since Uni. Has a UK Licence but never found it necessary to get a car as public transport good & cheap. He's interested in a M3W. To those that know, what licence is required (bike or Car), will he need to take a CH test?

Thanks,

J. Neil

Hi Milt - I called the Strassenverkehrsamt in Zurich a few weeks ago for the very same reason. It was (verbally) confirmed to me that the "B" (for cars) is sufficient.

Further, a foreign driving license may only be used in Switzerland for a maximum duration of 12 months. After this "grace period" the license may no longer be used! During these 12 months, the switch is super easy and a formality without an actual driving test (if it is a license issued by a EU/EFTA state). As this period expired, I can't confirm what the procedure is, but I think one could argue that he was studying, had no car and hence missing the deadline is forgivable...

Related to this, see this website from the Swiss government. Of course in English...

Boone,

He's not been studying but working, but never driven or had car since arriving 3 years ago. Still worth trying.

Thanks for the website. Just the job.

Hello,
the M3W is a Motorbike, you need "A".
The Test Drive is not easy, a lot of People i know failed.

Hi MRGDR

While the M3W is registered as a Motorbike, to drive it you need a "B". This was verbally confirmed by the Strassenverkehrsamt Zurich (road traffic licensing department canton of Zurich) and can also be checked on this website:

http://www.stva.zh.ch/internet/sicherheitsdirektion/stva/de/StVAlf/LFkat.html

...where it clearly states within the description for "B" that this includes three-wheeled vehicles not heavier than 3500kg.

To all:
as owner and driver in Switzerland, I confirm the following:
an M3W is registered as motorcycle, i.e. you pay street taxes as well as insurance for a Motorcycle.

Nevertheless, to driving it, all you need is the "B" (for car) in your driver license.

I can confirm this. My wife's got no bike driving licence and we were told by the 'Strassenverkehrsamt Aargau' that a car licence is required.
Otherwise my wife would have registered for the motor bike driving test with the M3W smile
