It is pretty much a Miata thing. I have a '90 Miata and have thought about doing this to it but just never got up the ambition as it shifts nicely as is. This would be something you could easily do to your M3W if you felt the need.

The stock gear shift especially with the later rearward position is probably the greatest thing about the M3W. I find I'm tempted to shift up just to have the pleasure of shifing down again. When the decision is made to overtake another vehicle, the obligatory down shift is an absolute pleasure being both quick and positive.

Whilst you will likely be tempted by a series of other mods, or dare I suggest fixes, I think it unlikely the gear shift will be one of them.

Wasn't it the earlier shift that was mounted further back?

Draggin,
I think the shifting on the present setup is very short as-is. I put 70k miles on a 93 Miata and can tell you the M3W gearbox is snickier than my old MX-5's. It's a toggle switch.

My (early) M3W has a very imprecise box 4th to 5th especially and I invariably change from 4th to third! I may therefore consider this conversion. My late father had 5 or 6 mx5's (Miatas) He loved them but I found them extremely boring and characterless, just like a two seater tintop.

I sometimes find myself shifting just by the stalk and not the ball. It is snicky but it works!

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

I wonder if your issue may be the gizmo that they made to move the shifter back, see the device at the back of the trans? The older cars have that rectangular box, and a straight shifter, the newer cars have a rearward swept shifter, and no box.

because the later shifter bends back so far I dont think that the short shifter is even a workable option.
