I'll stick to my diesel and petroleum cars for as long as I can thank you. The infrastructure to support electric vehicles is a long long way off yet.

Superb link from EddieCairns absolutely fascinating.
If we have a significant increase in electric car use, and assuming they will not only be recharged overnight it must result in increased use of OCGT and Coal generation. Less efficient and more polluting.

I just can not see how this electric idea can work countrywide. Its OK for many of us with drives and private parking, but how do the rest. in flats and town houses manage. We cant have thousands of cables hanging out of windows and across pavements. A+E would go into overload. In the M4 servises a few weeks back THREE charging points, but dozens of cars filling at the pumps. It just can not work. Apart from the loss of tax to the goverment.

Illogical. The reason that cows fart so much is that they are vegetarian. So the only effect of you going veggie is that its you rather than the cow producing the gas. Plus maybe an effect on your social life! ooo

It ain't just veggies.....

We had chilli con carne for dinner last night, & I doubt that any vegetarian could hold a candle to me. In fact, I wouldn't recommend anyone with a naked flame to get too close.....

Interesting discussions...

We own a power station, only produces 4kWh max, and averages about 9kW/day. Still, every little helps!

We have changed all lights to LED where it is possible, but still have a few incandescent QH capsule bulbs in things that are too small to take the LED equivalent. Also a few fluorescent units, but they are all marked for replacement!

The car paradox: we have 3, the V8 Morgan, averages 24mpg. The v6 Turbo Diesel Merc averages 33pmg because of a lot of short trips. The inline 4 cylinder supercharged 1800cc petrol Merc averages 38mpg....

So, the Merc is the least fuel efficient and most polluting....should I replace it? In a perfect world yes, but in my world, no. It is bought and paid for and worth only about £12K. Replacing it with a petrol hybrid would need me to find about £35k. That is a lot of diesel..... and i'm not sure about either the charging infrastructure or the green credentials of electric cars.

So, short of a lottery win we will stick with what we have.

Peters post reflects an article I read in Road & Track a while ago where the move to smaller, more fuel efficient cars in the USA was deemed sensible but the very people who need to do this to get the benefit were less well off sections of the population who were stuck with their gas guzzlers.

Peter your maths or logic are flawed!

Your Mog is the least fuel efficient, maybe not as dirty!

I think you should sell them all and get one of these!

Induction loops buried in the road or in car parks would allow charging without cables.
