I have pulled My TR engine many times. With the engine and Moss Box still attached. I use a engine leveler. Mandatory IMO.
I set the engine and Moss/Bellhousing on 2 furniture dollies and using shims/wedges level both. I then remove the bell housing/moss from the engine. All this to prevent bending the pilot shaft.
I developed this idea after the first time I removed the engine and bent the spigot on the long pilot shaft. Years ago.l

Thanks for all of the advise. I plan on pulling the Moss box first (to address some leaks) with that out I will remove the quill shaft which should make separating the engine from the bell-housing easier I hope.

I've pulled many an engine from various MGB's and always used an engine leveller as previously mentioned. A "must have" piece of kit. It makes it a one man job at a push.

Following on from my earlier posting and assuming the gearbox is still in the car, I can't remember if I used to take the water pump off to increase clearance to get the engine forward enough to disengage the quill shaft. Or am I thinking of a crossflow engined 4/4? Possibly. A crossflow is easier to remove 'sans' waterpump although with a load-leveler, simple enough - a bit of angling and Robert's your mother's brother.

One thing that makes me wonder a bit.....the chassis crossmember that supports the gearbox is welded to the chassis. If it was bolted then wouldn't that make a gearbox/clutch job easier? If ever I needed such jobs then perhaps cutting and replacement with bolt on would be an option. A suitable u-channel with mountings to reinforced chassis points is not a major job.

I've seen that done on MGB's but it is said to weaken the structure if the welded cross-member is replaced with a bolt on.
