If you choose somewhere interesting in France, you could find yourself becoming very popular with TM members "just popping in".

One more consideration-
If you choose somewhere interesting in France, you could find yourself becoming very popular with TM members "just popping in". Hah! Sounds like a promise Paul.  Just sms your eta. There'll be a line-up though - the Australian nieces and nephews of my second cousins, complete with boyfriends/girlfriends, the sons and daughters of long forgotten colleagues who are on their European tour... Australians do like to travel and have no qualms about knocking on doors even if the last time you saw them they were learning to tie shoe laces. We hope to have "self contained" accommodation for guests.

A predicament. 7 years ago we had the same problem. Retiring from Norway with its 3 short months of summer and cold winters. We chose France, Girond area and have not regretted it. Winters can get cold @-8 when winds come off Central Europe, but summer, spring and autumn are pleasant and not the 40s you can get in Spain and Cyprus. French Med coast can get expensive and overwhelmed by tourists in the Summer. Dordogneshire is as it sounds but Lot and Garonne and Girond are a good mixture of French and expat. Do not know about Ger but it is pretty."
This is encouraging and yes there is some pretty countryside in the Gers and some great villages. It is very much old rural France and like you we are not keen on the Mediterranean coast for the reasons you mention. Have also thought about the Girond.

Merci Yorrick. We are keeping an eye on the Brexit implications but feel we have options even if the negotiations go badly. Wealth tax? Not a problem as no wealth i.e. not much capital but we will both have adequate pensions. Have been looking at house prices and we will find something but it won't be a chateau.

Over the years we've created msidrered livng in different places. A number of years back we strongly considered moving out to South Africa but the kids were of school age and a host of other issues made it a non starter. Recent years we've considered moving to mid Wales for a brief moment at some point in our lives. However, before Christmas my wife had a very sudden and violent attack from kidney stones, we didn't know the cause at the time, and then we were very lucky and glad to only be 15 minutes drive from a decent hospital. I'm not saying it would be the deciding factor to where we might live in the future but it certainly repositioned what was significant to us.

France has it's faults, but it's a good place to live.

About a decade ago I was a thousand miles from home and involved in a road crash. If it wasn't for someone helping me out from laying on the road to going through a very scary hospital with no English spoken, I would have been very frightened.
Now imagine being 80+ there..
Just a few thoughts. We have some acquaintances who moved to Portugal and a small village. At first they really didn't know any of the locals and thought that they were a bit standoffish. Then he had a serious accident and was in hospital. Within hours of the news getting out the whole village rallied around in support of him and his wife, it started with them bringing meals to her and offering transport to the hospital and then went on from there. Now they have many friends. What they thought of as standoffishness was just the local people's respect of their privacy and not wishing to intrude but the moment they realised help was needed all the barriers were broken. I suspect wherever you go, outside the major cities, you will always find good hearted people that want to get to know you and are prepared to help in the case of need. Whether or not this ultimately builds friendships is as much up to the newcomer as it is to the older residents.

SWMBO got a message from a Spanish Estate agent yesterday, saying that they had lots of properties coming up for sale because of 'older' brits selling because of Brexit.
Not sure whether that would be because of the exchange rate on pensions or because of NHS fears, but they obviously didn't realise that we were old gits as well.
It does make me wonder how property prices will be affected though.
