Slowly slowly I'm coming to the decision to replace my 2003 4/4 4 seater with a new or nearly new 2 seater plus 4. What I'm surprised about is that most of the cars for sale from 2007 onwards seem to have been speced with PVC weather equipment rather than mohair. I had always considered mohair as the default choice (BMW / Saab Merc etc have stuck with it where they have not gone for tin tops) and PVC just conjures up images of old MGs with ripped hoods. Is it a price thing or am I missing something here ? Any views ? And if you have a nearly new classic with PVC weather equipment are you happy with your choice and why ? After colour this seems to have become the next most important decision ....! Thanks.

soft-top = pvc, cheaper, easier cleaning
tonneau-top= mohair: beautiful

I guess it also depends on whether you will use it. It is a lot of money to have spent if like me you rarely do. They look nice, of that there is no doubt although I had a tonneau cover on my first mog which marked badly. meabh.

I have mohair (twillfast) on both Mogs (and the Z3).
Difficult to clean, particularly when there are a lot of birdies focusing attention on your P&J!
Easier to use in cold conditions too... However, if you reproof a hood or tonneau, it should be done on the car (as I found with my '76 4/4 - now difficult to get all the fasteners done up as the hood shrank slightly, or maybe I need stronger fingers!).

Cheers,

For me, it was the price. Mohair looks classy, but I drive open 99%, so why spending the extra money? spend

The only thing that I sometimes regret, is, that I didn't choose the old style hood. I really like the "modern" hood for its simplicity, but it looks kind of "messy" when down.

Sunny greetings,
Ivo

To be honest I had not thought of that combination but it makes a lot of sense. I rarely drive with the roof up so why spend the money on a mohair roof - but in contrast the tonneau is nearly always on. Thanks
