I usually try to mess these guys around as much as I can, I usually start by trying to get them to identify all sorts of technical information about themselves, and trying to get them to help me track down which of my computers is the source of the 'problem'.
They usually get fed up with me after about 5 minutes, but at least that's 5 minutes when they aren't hassling some other poor soul.

Lead them on for as long as possible into thinking you have a PC and are diligently following their instructions - then tell 'em you have a Mac. Really p*sses them off!

I usually ask them what the monsoon is like this year, whether the dabba wallah has been and how many wives they have....stunned silence followed by the phone being put down
A variation on a theme was the call I got advising me that my Nat West account had been hacked....it would have been concerning if I actually had an account at the Nat West

Had a call at 1000 this morning from an Asian Indian type voice claiming his name was Mike and it was about my computer. Without further ado I told him he was a scammer and strangely enough he hung up..  Unusual but the number was not withheld and it is 01340 074857 just incase anybody knows where to report this stuff. Same call, but from 01340 074841 at about 10:45. I told him that the computer he was talking about was a company issue one and he needed to call our Corporate IT support in Bangalore and gave him the phone number. He said he would follow up. Yes, right. The number on the caller display is not a real number. They never are. The criminal gangs behind this stuff have realised we don't answer numbers that look odd. The STD code is for Market Weighton in Yorkshire, but no numbers on that STD code start with 0 or 1. Very interesting they are just so random. I hadn't realised that about the numbers couldn't start with a 0 either. I have had a play with them in the past but I was in the midst of painting and thinking it's a shame you're not here Mike I think I've found somewhere to park my brush !

We have BT call guardian (or some such), which eliminates unsolicited calls. It's fantastic. I wonder if that's an option for me as Talktalk business supplies both phone and broadband albeit on BT infrastructure. They are not the cheapest but extremely good service record for me, if there are line faults they are acting within 2 working days with Openreach at the latest.

I sometimes answered such a call with
Heddlu Dyfed-Powys Police, how can I help you?
My standard response when in work at Ops.
If they didn't hang up but asked for clarification I carried on with comments about my home number being diverted to police due to an ongoing investigation and could they please answer my questions. If they were still online I asked for their details, location, purpose of call etc. Most calls ended early but a couple didn't realise I was time wasting them.
Good fun if I had the time.

What gets bloody well under my skin is these recorded messages you pick the phone up and bang its some voice flogging you something, no point in telling it to bugger off. But if you keep a track they are usually at the same times each day so you can just ignore them but keep a note of the number just in case its not .
