In my quest for a nicer exhaust sound I've come across the option to remove/omit the back box with a straight through pipe off the original middle silencer.
Has anyone tried this option and if so what were the effects?
I don't really want to go to the expense of a sports system and suspect the likes of the Librand's might be a little too loud.

I tried this on my plus 4 with a side exit, too loud and didn't sound nice at all. Some louds are nice sounding but this was more like a blown manifold so put it back to original but removed the tail pipe acoustic trim for a short length of straight pipe, made it burbly when it was hot, much better.

Thanks, yes I've seen that too and wondered how it would sound in combination with their back box deletion pipe. With your installation have you maintained the back box? How does in sound and run?

If I understand what you are asking the item you refer to as the middle silencer is the catalytic converter (or cat for short). It does have some silencing effect but it is not a silencer as such. The rearmost box is the silencer and removing that will effectively give you an unsilenced car. It will also have a huge effect on the functioning of the engine management system and may be so far off the limits of functioning of the fuel map as to risk damage to the engine in the long term.
If you want a better sound you should consider fitting an exhaust system from a recognised supplier that can also provide a re-map of the ECU to suit that exhaust system.
I see that Williams now have a system for the Duratec 2.0l engine and I imagine that they have a suitable re-map to go with it.
Not as cheap as fitting a straight through pipe but a much better solution and should give no problems for an MOT.

Back in the day of carbs and distributors we used to remove the silencer for racing and substitute a straight through pipe (sometimes with a baked bean can painted black as "visual" silencer)
This certainly gave more power (backed up by dyno figures) but more importantly it enabled you to hear the engine note of your own car in a field of very noisy similar cars.
Now that ECU controlled fuelling and ignition is pretty much standard, the optimisation of the exhaust is best done scientifically. Also important for road cars is the effect on emissions. It is no good having a great system if it no longer allows the car to pass the required figures at MoT (or equivalent) time. Euro 5 emissions standards are incredibly tight, and any changes to the exhaust manifold and position of the cats is going to have a major effect.

My 86 cvh only has the silencer (middle as per above link ala Melvin Rutter ) and sounds very nice with a straight thru pipe Only problem is that the tail pipe rattles against the chassis of the car when cold. It's a tight squeeze

I think from your description that the back box (behind the rear wheel?) is just an acoustic trim and you are retaining the silencer which sits under the front wing by the drivers door. If so, removal of it will not make a huge difference to the sound.
