My parents have never really had much interest in cars. Growing up we had a couple of second-hand Austin A40s; an 1100, which I learnt to drive in; and a Vauxhall Chevette, which my father hated. Their first new car was a '79 Ford Escort Popular, the base 1.1 model with no extras and no chrome.

I think the only vehicle my dad has ever had a fondness for was his Piaggio Ape. He saw them when he was on a holiday in Italy in 2005 and thought they looked perfect for commuting to and from his allotment. When he got back he bought one...

Did you ever get to drive it, I imagine they are quite fun in a quirky way and must have attracted a lot of interest.

A great thread, but it is making me feel old as many of the cars mentioned were mine, e.g. Austin 10, P6 Rover (x2)(my favourites), and a Wolseley 6/99. My Dad had a Standard Flying 9 (his favourite) but had to sell it on the outbreak of WW2. Later he had an Austin Devon and a Commer Van.

Looks a very handy little tool that. Not sure I'd want to trundle to work in one, but I can understand using one for allotment &c. grin2

My Dad tended to keep cars for a long time.
My memories were:

An MG Magnette ZB (JFB 461)
A Rover 2000 TC (NUF 410G)
A Volvo 144 (OAE 118M)

Strange that I remember all the registrations!
We also had a Triumph Herald 12/50 which my Sister and I learnt to drive in (CFB 366C)

He enjoyed looking after them, but left the oily bits to the garage.

So many nice comments and anecdotes on this thread. And for those who lost a parent before they were ready it makes me realise how blessed I am to still have a dad to talk to about all the cars and tractors we knew. Just don't start him on the history of the mouldboard plough! oldgit

Dad had a selection of VW's during my childhood, 1300 Beetle, Type 2 estate, 412L Variant. At one point we went British and had a couple of Triumphs (Dolomite varieties) and a Maestro (BAD).

His favourite was probably a Triumph 2500S Saloon. It has such a smooth ride and wood interior that it was so much nicer than other cars we owned.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

In the 50s it would have been a Ford Zephyr 6
In the 60s a Hillman Hunter
In the 70s a Renault 16
In the 80s a Toyota Carina - the only one not to give him any trouble!
