Sorry for not knowing, but what are "cherry bombs"? American hot-rod glass-pack "muffler" from the '60s originally. Named after the rather loud "Cherry bomb" fireworks. Known for being loud. original Cherry Bomb glass-pack

For a long time now I have been concerned by the standard exhaust pipes and the headers glowing bright enough to light cigarrettes off and wanted to join the de-resricted (sorry noisy b*****ds group) but having retired 4 years ago I was not too keen on spending the sort of money required for either the factory stage 1 pipes or the G56 set up, which I have no doubt are very good.
When I was at the Kit Car Show at Stoneleigh last May, a company called "Custom Chrome" had a stand there and they currently still manufacure the well known "Cherry Bombs" that were very popular in the 60's and 70's. I enquired if they could custom make me a set of pipes that would fit the M3W and incorporate the Cherry Bombs.
They said that they would either need the car for a few days or alternatively, if I could let them have the existing pipes to use as a pattern, they would be able to do this.
As you may have read in one of my earlier posts, my car was badly damaged last July due to a rear end smash and was off the road until December being rebuilt by Williams Automobiles.
I took the opportunity whilst the car was off the road to collect the pipes from WA and take them to CC so that they could produce me a new set as previously discussed with them.
They made me a set of pipes incorporating the Cherry Bombs in stainless steel and the pictures below are when I took the new pipes down to Williams Automobiles to try.
Needless to say, they fitted perfectly and they sound great.
The car is noticeably livlier and I still have the original (standard) air filter and no more glowing headers.
The cost of these pipes was just over £600 for the pair.

I would like to state here that I have no connection with Custom Chrome or their employees, either financial or otherwise, other than being their first satisfied customer for pipes for the M3W.
Very smart - a great solution especially as original heat shields can still be employed. On the subject of cost and since I have seen no reports to suggest KH or G56 solutions are superior, I have been impressed by recently received AR Motosport stage 1 kit at £925.30 inc. Vat. Substantially cheaper than either of the other popular options, the well constructed silencer part of the exhausts dismantle after removing dome head screws to reveal removable baffles. The supplied after market S & S air cleaner and Muscle cover also seem of very robust construction. Just fitted the latter in short order which completely replaces original unlike G56 solution. Like yours, new exhausts will also accommodate original heat shields.

Having a hard time visualizing how the silencer could be disassembled. The front end cap of silencer has a tight fitting flange into silencer body. It's secured with six dome head setscrews spaced radially around the body which locate into tapped holes in the flange. Taking it apart allows access to the baffle within which is secured via a single nut and bolt.

Today I used a 38mm hole cutter on the front baffles. Only needed one cutter but its a slow job. I did not manage to fully cut through so the cut out is only bent back but it wont rattle. Plenty of smoke for 2 miles till my cutting fluid burnt off.
There is more bark now under acceleration but at steady speed seems no louder. Hard to tell with a short run but it does feel a bit more lively. I wonder if fuel consumption will improve with a freer breathing engine or will using it a bit harder cancel it out?

Tim G, I had the same problem with the plug not dropping out. I took a bent piece of rod and put a hook on the end and bent the plug back and forth till it dropped out--then I could fish it out
