Seems that the long rumoured deelopment of a Rotrex supercharger conversion for our engines has finally made the light of day in the new Hesketh Valiant SC motorcycle. Good figures - 210bhp and 217lbs/ft - which would make our cars fly, let alone a 2-wheeler at half the weight. Neat work too...

Wonder how long our drive-line would last eh ?!

Where to begin? Both compensator and transmission to be beefed up. Frame in front would need major upgrade. Front tires and shocks as well. Twice the horse power and twice the torque is no small thing.

I see this thing being used for drag races with an engine rebuild happening often.

But that's just me...

One set of exhausts per climb. One chassis per event. One engine per month. wink

Honestly for the amount that you would need to upgrade in order to keep up with the power increase; money could better be spent elsewhere. It all comes back to one thing; Weight loss. Less strain on parts, less wear/tear, some power output, but with gained performance. Aerodynamics would go a long way as well, but I doubt many would be up for that.

And you need to get that power to the ground. I think our rear tire is just about at the traction limit with the power we now have.

I have a supercharged Miata. The 50% increase in horsepower and torque "enhanced" what was already there. I fear that essentially doubling the horsepower and torque of the M3W would overwhelm the remaining bits.

I'm not sure I've seen any failures in the car that are power related - anecdotally speaking Stage 1 kit cars are no less reliable than standard cars for instance. Similarly I don't think the rear tyre has a traction issue (again even in Stage 1 cars) other than in first, so a bit a of scope for more power with a careful right foot in the low gears. That said, quite how fast you actually want to go in a M3W is another question.

I'd certainly be willing to have a go in a supercharged one and keep an open mind.

Memories of a ride in an Opal Kadette which had a V8 dropped in. It was barely controllable and wanted to leave the ground. Soul who owned it finally rolled it to death but walked away. A match not made in heaven!
