Makes me wince looking at it. Looking through the threads this is how the guys seem to do it though. with the full weight of the front of car on the the centre of it and the trolley jack.

My engineering sympathy tells me this is not right but I guess it's me who's wrong. Don't these tubes ever suffer curvature over time? Always used the crucifix on the 7 and the dedicated lift point on the Lotus.

To grease top and bottom pillars I'm assuming car needs to be lifted, however it looks like you could get to them with car on ground and lock to locking the wheels. I'll find out when the Wanner arrives, only done 150 miles so far so no rush yet, cheers guys

For a quick grease up do you guys use axle stands as well or just the trolley jack?

Kenny, you are correct in your concern although I have never heard of damage other than minor superficial damage caused by jacking under the crosshead.

Cut a piece of timber and rout a groove in the centre along the length. The groove will prevent the crosshead tube and therefore the car slipping off the wood. Cut the timber to be as wide as possible in order to spread the load.

I use also a piece of plywood to put between the rear crossmember and on the chassis sides. It prevents damage.

Good shout David. I was going to devise a method of spreading the load, that seems like a great idea.

I have a nice low entry quick lift alloy jack which I'll be using. It has a nice large flat and protected lifting area but I still don't like the idea of using it on its own for that particular lift.

I'm surprised there's no extra load spreading reinforcement there solely for this purpose if I'm honest.

You don't need to jack the car but it helps I think.

Please use axle stands to be safe.

Greasing procedure by year is on the gomog website.

I would never recommend working under a car supported by just a trolley jack. Always place wooden blocks under the tyres or use axle stands. You don't get a second chance.

Thanks guys, I agree whole heartedly with your safety tips too. I never have and never will work underneath a car on a jack.

However looking at the greasing points I can't see why I'd need to get under it to grease it, I could be wrong.

My drive is quite steep. So I park the car on it & put on near full lock. Then I can get under & grease the lower ones. The tops ones if you have them are easy access via the wheel arch.
