if you cannot judge the width of the car without seeing the nearside front wheel, perhaps this is not the car for you. Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but wouldn't his nearside wheel be the left front? Being a LHD and all... No because with standard convention left and right of vehicle are recognised from drivers position or when viewed from rear. This would make the difficult to see nearside wheel the right hand one in a LHD car.

I'm sure Richard Aus will be along soon to give us his considered opinion as a Naval Architect that it would be much easier if we called it port and starboard. Quite...then we could use red and green indicators for port and starboard. To aid remembering which was which we could use "the drunken driver left his red port" (OK we might need something more 21st century...).

As a non native English speaker I find stuff like this quite interesting. You learn every day.
Near side as an expression does not exist in Swedish. I thought it just meant nearest to the curb/side walk.
Looking forward to clarification. It does. The 'near side' is the side nearest the pavement/sidewalk/kerb. Nothing to do with the position of the driver. In the UK, the nearside is the left and the offside is the right. In the US, it's the other way around, because they drive on the wrong side of the road. This is why, if you watch a Western movie, the first thing anyone does when mounting a horse is to wheel the beast around to get it pointing in the correct direction. They would rather do that than stand in the middle of the road to mount and get run over by the Deadwood stage being driven by an inebriated Jack Elam.

Guys, I stand corrected. It seems that "near side" relates to the curb side of any car, regardless of LHD or RHD.
Not being real familiar with the term, I assumed (bad word) it meant nearest the driver in whichever orientation.

Growing up in the country, a car had two sides.... the drivers side and the passengers side! The "near side" would have been the ditch which was to be avoided at all times.
