I was curious as to why the vacuum pump had 2 ports. I found this on the web, which explains all. Exhaust flap valve...I guess on a cross pipe linking the LH and RHS exhausts, the flap will close when in sport mode, or something. Any BMW expert here? This is the front of the engine in an Aero chassis, the pump is upper left. Complicated, isn't it? Not at all surprised the bonnet, front bodywork and O/S wing had to come off.

Incredibly complex engine.... I am always slightly boggled by who designs these things!

Peter, thanks for the update. I've added this to my "ones to watch list", as I did the issue on the potential failure of side-exhaust bracket. Sadly, that one I have experienced, in-spite of taking mitigation actions.
Time will tell on Vac Pump.

I have seen a couple of cars with exhaust flaps. They were to divert the flow from the silencer normal route ( usually not straight) to a straight through alternative pipe. Purpose was to improve flow and noise. Not sure if a BMW is set up like that though. Some car modders fit a flap valve to dump the ehaust out before the silencer box to the underside, cutting out a big part of the system.

Yes, the C43 has three valves... One opens or closes a transfer pipe between the two sides and the other two divert the exhaust away from the rear silencer on each side. This happens only in "Sport +" mode which, the handbook suggests, is not for road use...
