It's all quite scary to me.

Yes a Roll Over Bar is IMO a good thing.

But if say an "obstacle" should come at or through the windscreen then the occupants would not stand much chance.

Instead of worrying about this sort of accident occurring, I'm taking it as a positive that I might now have a chance of survival if my Mog overturned

I've struggled with this for a long time. A short (low) roll bar won't do a lot of good upside down. You need a competition height bar for that. As Steve says, a more common side/rear quarter impact could cause your head to hit the roll bar and so could be worse than not having one.

This is an old question to me. I.e. the librands "road" short roll bar could mean more safety than nothing. At least you could keep some more "headroom" in the worst case and it is out of the heads position, at least regarding a side impact.

Any thing is better than nothing, no one can predict where a head or body is going in a accident.We all take a chance every time we sit in a car.

Having played with Caterham Sevens of varying power outputs for the last 25 years, both on the road and in competition, I don't think any Seven owner would not consider having a bar. In fact the Lotus Seven club will only allow the competition height bar for cars, on their own track days and competitions, which must have a clear 2" between the top of a helmet and the bottom of the bar.

The big problem however is how to avoid damaging your head on the bar, but the likes of Demon Tweaks sell special dense foam 'lagging' which when put in the vicinity of driver and passenger heads will at least give slightly less of a headache, and allow one to at least have a better than average chance of survival or serious injury.'

I had an "oofer" moment a couple of years ago when hitting a diesel spill on a roundabout exit. The back kicked out quite a bit. noticed and voiced her concern! It was on the Fellmog Windermere weekend. Anothef Taffmogger was going home on the Sunday night in very heavy rain and saw a couple of cars on their roof on the M6.
We had a chat and agreed on fitting rollbars.Lawrie at Williams fitted Librands bars on two cars and a third needed a custom bar as he had a short door car.
The rollbar is not full race spec but can have a higher one fitted( few bolts only)and fits under the hood. A proper race height bar would not..My seat is lowered by removing the wooden spacers so head clearance is just ok.It would save us in a simple roll/topple but a high speed somersault? Hmmmmm. It does give peace of mind though. Car also feels more solid.

I had a big off in France on the Autoroute a few years ago, taken out by a French lady in an Alfa who was on the phone. I ended up going backwards into the Armco lining the hard shoulder at somewhere around 45 MPH. On my +8 I have a padded headrest attached to the roll bar on the cross brace bolt. My head hit the headrest quite hard but stopped the whiplash and I wasn't concussed. The bigger issue was the spare wheel and woodwork which sheared off and cleared my head ending up a good 100 yds from the car. "one life lost". I have had a number of convertibles and would never dream of not having a roll bar fitted.

I'm told by a friend of the couple in the overturned Gentry on the M11 come from near Canterbury and that the lady is much improved but not sure about the guy.
