I have a Haibike with a Yamaha motor - it is the best thing since sliced bread -- Also allowed me get back fit again after my heart attack in that I could set the assist level to keep my heart rate within the limits i had been set and in the knowledge that i was safe -- brilliant. Now my heart specialist recommends a pedelec to all his patients!!!

 Thats my Pedelec. It#s from the fifthies, NSU womans bike with Rex Hilfsmotor -fast like hell (more than 40 km/h fast) - dangerous like hell - no real brakes- - best fun with clothes on - real eyecatcher Torsten

I'd love one, but here in the UK it would need a rear numberplate, and insurance, plus lights and a crash helmet.
Might just as well have a Honda 50!!

Hi Peter,
we need a licenceplate too. The licenceplate is also the insurance evidence and the costs are only 50 bucks per year. No helmet needed.

The lovely lady Alwena wanted to get back into cycling.....the only issue being the size if some of the hills around here....as Stringers Best Mate knows too well 😉
So I offered to buy her an electric bike! Blimey!! I'd rather dismissed these in the past. Went to a brilliant cycle shop in Ulverston where we had the opportunity to try out a whole range of bikes. Whilst she zoomed up and down the roads whooping with joy, I caught sight of one of the shop guys mountain bikes. A Specialised with slightly modded motor and electronics. Hop on it and take it for a spin he said.....well how could I refuse 🤓 Whoooo. Changed my views straight away.
Picked up Wen's bike this morning and bought one for myself as well! Took it for a spin beforehand. Rode out of the showroom and almost took the doorframe out....it was in turbo mode! Anyway.......I'm now hooked! We had one for a while, but sold it on, too heavy, very poor stability and the ride was diabolical, power ran out quickly. Also, in the UK up to last year we were limited to 250w and 15.5kph, but since 2016 the limits have been raised to 25kph and 1Kw. Anything more takes them into moped classification, needing tax, insurance, crash hemet, etc. Might be time to re-visit the idea...  .

Torsten Torsten, in the UK it is a moped, falling into L1e-B type approval classification. But as mentioned in my reply to Jays, things have changed!

Nothing wrong with old mopeds, I've recently had a 1968 velosolex ( 200mpg ,0.4 bhp , tax free.) Yes you need insurance and a rear number plate.
But very cheap.
As is its replacement mobylette, 1968 ,2bhp,tax free cheap insurance.
These leccy bikes are plain expensive no matter how you look at them

Peter - you are limited to 25Kph as you always have been -- the 15.5Kph was a figment of someones imagination -- as you are (still) part of the EU you are subject to EN15192 which is what sets out the specs of a pedelec. this is a 250W motor, whicch can only assist when pedalling and must cease assist at 25Kph - above that it is a Spedelec whcih is a standard adopted by Germany and Holland and allows assistance up to 45Kph look up Haibike.de and search for spedelecs and you'll see the models -- they need a helmet, licence plate and insurance.
In Ireland no one knows how to licence them and as a result there are many spedelecs around without proper legality!!!

You are quite right Robbie. I think Peter's got himself confused because 25kph = 15.5mph.
My Kalkoff cuts the power assistance at 25kph / 15.5 mph, but that's fine because by the time you are doing that speed you don't need it anyway. I think most people possibly don't get what peddles are all about - it's not about going faster, it's not about putting in less effort, it's about enabling you to do things that you wouldn't normally be able to do - like going up steep hills or carrying heavy loads.
