I have a 1994 Plus 8 with 26K mileage. An annoying intermittent squeak (more noticeable when idling) has developed which disappears when I just gently touch the clutch pedal. I have well lubricated the pedal shaft but this squeak still persists. The clutch otherwise is working fine as with the rest of the car. A new cluch cylinder was fitted by the previous owner about 12 months ago. Possibly the clutch bearing? Any suggestions other than ear plugs?

Sounds like the bearing to me, try winding it up to 4000 rpm and dropping the clutch, kill or cure.

I've just given that a try and the sqeak seems less audible. The clutch bite is spot on and crisp. If it is the clutch thrust bearing do you think it may eventually get better with wear or is a replacement the only option?

It could go either way in my experience. I once had to drop an Escort gearbox when the squeak became intolerable.

Two other options. Depending on the type of clutch lever, you might be able to add just enough preloaded to stop the squeak. Even lubricating the pivot might be enough.

If you can see inside the bell-housing you might consider a tiny squirt of lubricant but be very careful. I once lost the plastic tube off a can of something when it pinged into the bell housing.......

Try it again, it may be that soft driving has polished the bearing

Thanks for your advice. I'll give it a go. The car has done about a 1000 miles a year from new and cosseted throughout its life. Next time I'll take it out I'll wring its neck a bit! 😉

Is it a carbon or a bearing thrust? I'm not familiar with these boxes but maybe you have an access hole or rubber cover around the clutch fork? A little squirt might be enough to quieten it?

Also consider the clutch pilot bearing as well.

I doubt it will be a carbon bearing from that year.
