Steve, The best Ive found is Dark Sky It uses the phone GPS to pinpoint your location and checks weather radar for rain headed your way. It then plays a little tune and displays warning notification. Accuracy is usually a few minutes. I was sceptical but this one is reliable.

I also use Windguru for sailing although I always make allowances for wave height particularly when influenced by land.
I shall try out some of the apps suggested as weather radar can't not but help accuracy.
One point that may be of interest to some is that when using the BBC and Met Office websites, I use Abersoch rather than Pwllheli (my home port) for the local weather. I suspect that they use data for Snowdonia for Pwllheli and Abersoch seems more representative.

Can anyone with much more meteorological prowess than me suggest either a brilliant weather forecasting app or web page that gives an idea of approaching rain..? There are so many out there that are variations on a theme, and I'd guess that most gain their info from only a handful of sources, but what does the team think about the accuracy (if you can ever be accurate with weather) of these..? The ideal would be the F1 rain forecasting sites, without the thousands it costs to use them.. Just got halfway through the lawn and it's tipping down.. And if anyone suggests the wet stone on a string app, or the seaweed it's curtains, ok..? Your mistake was mowing the lawn............that's a woman's job

I find that the Norwegian site yr.no can give a pretty accurate forecast hour by hour for our local village and seems to be able to do this for anywhere on the planet ---Try it out! its Free!!!! I total agree! I use it since more than 5 years. It has a nice forecast hour by hour. AND There is only a short distance between the different locations. Sometimes only 5 kilometers distance and you get different forecasts. I often plan my trips using the app to decide where to go next.

Spoiled for choice Steve, or now just totally confused? I use The Weather Channel and AccuWeather, both free apps.
