The ignition warning light comes on intermittently -- on my 1984 4/4.
I have checked the visible connections from the alternator and they seem OK -- the battery is OK -- the voltmeter shows 13volts when running -- the car runs OK at present.
I can't see any other option but to replace the alternator which is only 6 years old.
Has anyone got any other ideas please ?

If its a typical Lucas ACR alternator of the period, I recall they had a separate diode in the warning light circuit. So you may get a warning light but it may still charge properly.
An auto electrician may be able to repair it.

Should be higher than 13v when charging....time for new alternator at £60.
have you checked the running voltage across the battery terminals with a multimeter?
Don't trust smiths instruments to be accurate!

A good alternator should be chucking out about 14.4volts offload.
As well as the alternator have the battery load tested if the cells are in a poor state they can cause odd symptoms.
Oh and it's a mog check the state of the connections at the chassis

Have you checked the belt and the pullies? Had a similar fault on a Kent engine which turned out to be the spot welded bottom pulley breaking up which caused the belt to slip but without the tell tale screeching noises!

Thanks for all your suggestions
I also emailed Peter Ballard -- he is the CVH Tech Services
specialist listed in Miscellany.
He suggested check battery and earth connections, which I did and found corrosion on +ive terminal post --- cleaned everything up and tried a run -out --- seems to have done the trick -- light now stays out
