Go along and watch Exeter Rugby team, super club and very welcoming, no connection but visited a few times when son was playing against them and always a friendly and warm welcome.

Decent academically; socially smarter than most of those in the tier below Oxbridge; quite hearty. It seems to generate a closer bond between its alumni and greater loyalty to the alma mater than I have seen with graduates from other Russell Group universities. He should have a good time there.

Quality University in a quality city full of life and history to go with it. Plenty of good social life and sports to join in with as well. We live 40 miles away and visit regularly, anything we can help with just pm me.
Good luck to him he will have a great time.
Our neighbours Son studied there 8 years ago and lives and works in Auckland and I'm sure would be happy to have a chat with your Son if he would like to.

We have an annual pilgrimage to Exeter in the summer whist the car is serviced at Berrybrook. Drop the car off early in the morning and trek over to Topsham via the ferry for a fat boys breakfast. Then walk up to Exeter along the river and just wander around for a while before heading back to collect the car at the end of the day. Exeter is a fascinating place. Topsham is steeped in history too with an interesting three story antiques warehouse on the quay if your son is a bit of a collector.

I used to sell WiFi to a lot of the Unis and met most of them - Exeter was always good. I guess you will like it as Auckland was not too different in feel when i last went there. As a few have said it is quite smart but not posh and has a lot of Uni focus. Surrounding interests include the VW Dub culture and other modern yoof stuff. If you can get him a decent VW T2 bus then he will be set! Weekend surfing was becoming a big thing.
Exeter itself is compact but very enjoyable. When I visited I felt it was best likened to a slightly less crazy version of Brighton with a lovely vibe in the summer evenings.
It is the flying base for FlyBe who do a good range of UK and EU flights as well if he needs to get about (even more). Book ahead to get god rates as they are pricy if not. Exeter StDavids train goes out of London Waterloo and is the easiest. LHR tube to Waterloo and then train to Exeter.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Yup, they signed him up aged 14. He went through their academy and on to a seniors contract and played there until mid 20's when he decided on a Law career as a priority (he is a qualified Lawyer these days) he had a year of none play (doing his LPC) when Darren Garforth phoned and invited him to train with Nuneatoon and a week later he was on an intensive programme and later became the club captain and senior pro there finishing out his rugby days. Great bunch you have down at Exeter, I used to go on my bike to that away match (BMW R1100RT) so I would whip there and back in a day with ease and always welcomed with a 'fancy a cuppa whilst you warm up' type welcome. Great club and great team, your very lucky!
