I am going to be a killjoy. Sorry but the intention is to ensure you are not at risk. If anything is not aligned your insurance company has a get out.

Best case:
Leave the car with the dealer, Get the V5C. Get the plate. Get the insurance against this (they will take several kicks if my experience is anything to go by as they use the DVLA which but are 3-5 days behind).

Record and mark your calls with the insurance so you are covered.

I don't expect you will put yourself or the new P&J at risk. I would feel horrible it if did and anything I said resulted in pain.

I have just taken a personal plate off my tin top prior to selling the car. It's very easy on DVLA web site.

But what I did not realise is that the new (replacement) number for the car is issued while you are on-line and you can immediately download a V948 (Number Plate Authorisation Certificate) (valid for 3 days) so you can then go and get a new set of plates made up and on the car the same day. Just a phone call to the insurance company to inform them of the number change and job done - all in a day! smile

Replacement V5C (new reg cert showing replacement number) and V778 (personal plate retention doc) arrived today (change made on-line last Thur). Well done DVLA.

Good to know and thanks for posting.
A significantly improved service, in comparison with when I last did this a few years ago.

Not read the whole thread but I have done this loads of times. I always keep the old (non personal plates) off the car (if it was a used car/bike)and then when I sell it I take my personal plates off and, so far, without exception DVLA, when I have asked, have reallocated the original registration number back to the car and I refit the old plates to sell it . Never had an issue.

When my Son went to University last year, I sold his car on his behalf. I took the private plates off, and paid the £80 fee, I'm assuming this is now on retention?

Will there be another fee if the plate remains on retention after the first year ?

If the personal plates were on the car from new then you will not know the replacement reg (as was my case) until one is assigned.

The personal reg that came off the car is now held on retention document (V778). Although I will be hopefully be putting it on another vehicle soon, my V778 says it is valid for 10 years. So no rush for a replacement vehicle!!

Also it says 'Assignment fee has already been paid' - I assume this is the fee when you transfer it to a new/other vehicle.

Hope this helps

When I took my last plate off and placed it on retention it was necessary to pay for it each year or multi-year or then put it on a car. If you don’t pay the repeat retention charge you no longer “rent” the plate and it goes back in the pool.

In some cases it was easier to put it on a 50cc moped if you were parking it for a bit. Even if the car/bike is SORN it keeps it and you don’t have to remember to pay for the retention.

Alistair the days of having to annually renew the rention of a number plate have long gone. I don't know the exact details because I have only held a number plate on retention for about three years.

Thank you. My error based on out of date info.

Looking at DVLA it is reported as

"How to take off a number
You can take off a private number online or by post. It costs £80. If you don’t assign the number within 6 years, you can apply for a refund."
