Peter - Autoglym produce a surface detailing clay bar kit which uses Autoglym Quick Detailer as a lubricant for the clay bar. The results are superb and you can literally feel the difference after minimal effort.

Whit degreaser from an bodyshop. Spray an cloth whith the degreaser an hang it with some tape over the place with the problem. Keep it wet 5 min an you can remover the tar without scratching or polishing .You can find the degreaser in an shop where they sell carpaint . It is used before painting an is total neutral for the paintwork.

While WD40 will remove tar spots, it is a lubricant not a solvent so it should leave a film of oil behind if its doing its job, its probably an insignificant amount and you really may well buff it off but if you spilled an oil based paint on your shirt you would not use WD40 to clean it off as it would leave a oily stain.
A degreaser is the right product to use whether its cheap white sprit/turpentine or costly tin made to do the same job but anything that removes tar will also remove wax.

Wd40 ( it's just fish oil ) I've been using it for 40 plus yrs. Petrol on a cloth works just as well

No mention of clay bars yet. Are tar spots too much for them?

I've used the 'white spirit then wax immediately' method many times. Relatively simple and seems to be effective.

Nah, you want to chisel them off mate. 2lb lump hammer, ½" cold chisel. One whack and they're gone. Easy.
