Since my post yesterday, I've been reflecting on other books I've read of late which I've enjoyed

Sleeping with dogs by Brian Sewell is a book about the 17 dogs Sewell owned over a long lifetime (usually rescued dogs). It's a well observed account of the relationship between a man and his dog, delivered with the usual sharp wit that Sewell fans loved about the man.

Hillbilly elegy by JD Vance is a fascinating account of Vance's upbringing in a poor family in Ohio, and how he rose above it. He dispassionately describes the white underclass, or white trash whose feelings of abandonment fuelled the outsider politics of Donald Trump.

Finally, Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch novels. My wife downloaded the first one of these, I've now read the first eight of them. I'd say Rebus fans should enjoy them.

Giles, if you are taken with M.C. do try James Lee Burke: beautifully written, poetic prose dripping with the atmosphere of the bayou. Dave Robicheaux is his character.
For those who like to read about Spitfires etc., try The Most Dangerous Enemy, by Stephen Bungay - a history of the Battle of Britain which, because of the availability of new information has a very different slant, both positive and eye opening.

The Tale of Genji, a fascinating contemporary insight into 10th century Japanese imperial court life. I'm not utterly convinced that I have sufficient attention span to complete it...at 55 I may not even have sufficient life expectancy! It's not a short book.

Just finished reading Tony Visconti: The Autobiography: Bowie, Bolan and the Brooklyn Boy.

For those of us growing up in the 70's it is a fascinating read as well as an interesting insight into the way in which music was recorded - particularly Marc Bolan and David Bowie.

Visconti seems to regard Bowie as a throughly decent chap. He is less favourable in his comments on Marc Bolan.

Still reading The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli. Didn't understand much of it first time around but as it's a handy size for a coat pocket Im reading it again whilst on planes. Think it may be a third read before I can make any sense of his theories smile

'Requiem for a Soldier' by Oleg Pavlov. Typically dense Russian descriptive prose and darkly comic. I'm struggling to find time to get properly into it. Probably not the right title for a Summer read.
