I recently updated my pinion (aka crank) pulley using S&S ‘Timing Belt Pulley Repair Kit’ (PN 370-0015).

As well as the new pinion pulley, this kit also includes three replacement nuts for the cam pulleys. The new nuts have a smooth underside and are designed to be held in place using copious amounts of Loctite 243 as opposed to the original serrated style.


I can only assume that S&S have encountered the serrated nuts coming loose over time so it may be worth fitting the later style nuts if you are doing any other work in the timing belt area.
p.s. Thanks very much to KBMOG for the loan of the ‘special tool’ required to hold the pulleys in position while removing & replacing the nuts. It worked a treat!

I am just curious as to why it is necessary to use alternative nuts that are smooth on the mating face rather than using the original serrated nuts.

Surely loctite applied to the threads of the original nuts would have had the same effect, (if not better), because you would then have the anti vibration effect of the serrations plus the locking effect of the loctite.

Good question. I did notice that the serrations dig in to the surface of the cam pulley, leaving a bit of a groove.



Therefore if they were taken off and replaced multiple times the serrations might become ineffective? Just my two penn'orth!

Oh, and there WAS some kind of loctite used on the threads of my serrated nuts too...

Do the 569 cams have any impact on how easy the engine turns over when starting? With more overlap I was thinking the 569 cams might help the engine spin over a bit faster.

I am considering doing some work in this area - any chance of a picture of this timing tool or quick explanation /drawing ?
My understanding is the pulleys are positioned using the holes through them into holes in the crank case?

Not that I noticed on mine.

The Easy Start feature lowers the compression until the engine fires so the increased lift of the 596 won't make any difference.

Does the Stage 2 cam upgrade smoothout the running of the engine?

My engine doesn’t feel any smoother than it did originally. It is after all, a big lumpy V-twin. It does feel stronger when you roll out to make a pass on a slower vehicle.

I would say it is more tractable and nicer to drive. It just feels smoother somehow.
