Friday , eldest turns 18. Passed his test last year, his Peogeot 106 , 995cc costs us £1400 to ensure with black box. Ouch. He is going to work for us this summer and needs to drive farmers fields to test for lime and fertiliser so 106 Won’t cut it. Ring our insurer NFU. Ask for quote for him on pick up and discovery commercial as named driver. Quoted me approx 2k extra per truck ! I then let fly at them and asked how come my farming mates kids can drive the farm trucks and vans, as they are not paying this extortionate amount. Was then told to ask for quote on any driver. So I did. Mitsubishi 180 up pick up and Discovery commercial 3.0 V6 250bhp was an extra £66 per year on top of my premium. Peanuts ! I asked him to repeat and it was right. Policy went up 66 quid, any driver with full licence, 18 year old and over, social domestic and pleasure, class A business use and off road cover on farms. Excess gone up to £550. Protected no claims 7.50. It makes little or no sense. Then asked do you want to quote on his 106 to which they said No Chance. Anyway took the cover, paperwork arrived today. Insurance companies ! I don’t get them.

His car now in yard and he has nicked my truck to camping in tonight!

A good outcome but there is no sense in it at all.

You are right there is no logic to this at all.

My mate asked for a couple of his similarly aged (65+) friends to be put on his policy for a long trip to France, and they gave him a reduction in premium! I can't fathom that one out.

My wife's mileage has been increasing recently due to her mother' nursing home being further away , so she phoned to report an increase in annual mileage to about 5000, and they quoted a lower number and gave her a rebate!

Just like airlines they make no sense when it comes to pricing.
When I bought my Roadster Peter Best who I had been with for 15 incident free years on other Mogs wanted nearly £800 up about £600 from my +4 premium.

Morgan Ins was cheaper than the +4!

I am getting some very good ins quotes these days but they all have very large excesses which obviously covers any risk of claim on the ins co.

That’s some good advice, thanks!

My business policy wants a fortune for any under 25’s, I have a spare van at the moment and it would be handy if my kids could use it, I’ll try doing it separate from the main fleet.

Check the fine print. Policies with "any driver" allowances sometimes exclude 'any person permanently residing at the same address as the main policyholder" (for obvious reasons where youngsters are concerned).

The same with "can drive any other vehicle" so long as not spouse or member of the same household.

Check the details of policy. Seems to good to be true.Any driver normally needs five years of driving.
Also vehicles at same address.

Thanks for your concerns. Note that the insurance is on our commercial vehicles. They don’t want to know if it’s a normal car. For those of you who live in rural areas or know of farmers or are involved in farming, lots of youngsters drive Landrovers and pick ups and the NFU seems to be the main insurer for this. It is also worth noting that my eldest daughter of 19 has a class c lgv license and the insurance through NFU on a 18 ton horse box is 400 Quid. Tractor insurance is also very cheap. Any driver with full license can drive a tractor with implements or trailer on road fully laden for around 3k per year. Bear in mind a new tractor costs 130 k, will travel on road at 50k with our lime spreader towing behind with 16 tonnes in it. All in all the outfit weighs approx 27 28 ton and you don’t need Lgv/HGV to drive it.

Don’t we just love the odd rules foisted upon us.
