Found quite an interesting YouTube channel comparing eV cars the guy is based in Norway under the channel TeslaBjørn guy called Bjørn Nyland, he is a Tesla owner himself but gets to use a lot of differing eV cars and it realistically highlights consumption and real charging rates at a variety of charging stations. This is in countries that have properly adopted the technology and it really shows how hit and miss the charging and range can be. Worth looking up if you have the time.

Their are several guys posting u tube vids about ev cars.
Lemon tea leaf, a Scottish guy who owns a Nissan Leaf mark 2.
Ev opinion a Winchester based guy who owns a mark 1leaf.
Ev express a chap who’s just bought a Hyundai kona
Aaron Russell who also owns a mark 2leaf.
As a Nissan Leaf mark 2 owner since March of this year I find them fascinating.
Lots of good videos to see which if you were thinking of buying a used or new ev are very helpful.
I am getting about 140-150 miles out of a charge from my leaf and as I have solar panels a storage battery and a zappi charger which allows me to charge purely from solar all my motoring is virtually free now.
My wife’s car (a Toyota Auris hybrid) is due for change next September and we’ll be getting another ev, perhaps the kona or a Renault Zoe or even another leaf. Can’t praise them enough, must be saving me a lot of money over the year.

Interesting. I looked on Auto Trader and according to them the cheapest Nissan Leaf, brand new, was £27,000. I then looked for 3 year old cars with average mileage. Prices seemed to start from £7,000. Hardly “free” motoring over 3 years!

Doesn't seem particularly different from what you'd expect of an equivalent gasoline-powered car? Not brilliant admittedly, but if you're doing 10,000 miles a year in a gasoline car that averages 40mpg you'd be spending something like £1500 a year on fuel which would offset the depreciation a bit.

With the manufacturers predicted life of the battery pack to be 5 years/ 100000 miles, who in their right mind would buy a 3 year old used car, with only 2 years life expectation
You can take out a battery pack lease deal , this will set you back £100 plus / month, the numbers just don't add up.

Many of the same issues apply for petrol cars. You have a tank of XX litres. You have an engine and right foot. Even with petrol your range varies just like leccy.

Heavy right foot ?
Passengers on board ?
Incorrect tyre pressures ?
Air/Con on or off ?

It's not as if the petrol car is always going to hit it's expected range either. I think the question is more about the gap between the testing methodology and real life.

With petrol you just have less fear of range anxiety due to the speed and availability of refueling. The same variability still applies.

The issue around total number of recharges and diminishing capacity is unique to the electric as well the disposal and haz-chem challenges which are not being addressed yet.

I read about these milage figures but how do they stand up in the real world. What does it take in energy on a cold frosty, dark morning? How and what heats the cab up and clears the windows, and how long does it take? Complete electro novice.

I have two clients with Nissan Leafs. They each say that they can only really get 60 miles out of them. Nissan apparently give you one free tow home a year.
Can't imagine how 150 miles is possible....?

Add to that the fact that that the equivalent car would only cost about 10,000. Vw up around 10T, elec up is 28T. And that we taxpayers give 5T or so to anyone rich enough to spend nearly three times as much as necessary on their car....seems like a complicated way to transfer money from poorer taxpayers to wealthy ones to me. And lets not forget that the average earner has contributed considerably to the installation of the solar panels in whoever is wealthy enough to afford them's house and if they charge up on the road we subsidise that too.....then it doesn't look all that free does it?

I have solar panels and I don't consider myself overly wealthy.
