Sawman Classiccars magazine is offering a CTEK XS800 as a gift in return for taking out a subscription. They say its worth £39 and the annual sub is £45.35 so you could get something to read over the long winter months along with looking after the Mog. I have one and have teh plug permanently wired in. I do not use it during the summer but its now tucked up and plugged in in the garage. Snow on the ground and it aint going anywhere for the moment.

CTEK 3600. I charge my 4/4 (1800 zetec) through the lighter socket.
It will happily rescue a completely flat battery (my kids' Polo) or keep a Morgan gel battery topped up.
A great buy.

My last Accumate died one hot summer. It was keeping the battery of my GL1200A alive...

Another vote for CTEK 3600s. I use one on the 4/4 and another on a compact tractor - both work a treat. The mini plugs are a neat idea - allowing a socket to be permanently attached to the battery - quick to unplug and off you go.

Can anyone advise.
I have a 4 year old gel battery in my 4/4. I use a trickle charger to keep it charged. This week when I got into the car and turned the ignition key there were no lights on the dash and no sound from anywhere. An eery silence in the garage...
I assume that this means a dead battery - I looked at connections and they seemed AOK. As I am flying off to the antipodes my brother has said he'll try jump leads and see if this works in starting the motor. He'll replace the battery if necessary.
Given that the battery is not that old I wonder if there could be anything else that results in no power apparently reaching the dash and the starter motor?

First thing I'd do is test the battery with a meter, or even a test bulb. After that it could be a number of things but there will be an ignition relay somewhere, so find it and try tapping, or substituting.

Frank, I agree absolutely. When batttery disconnected, I start without any problems after 4 months. When battery stays connected (the clock and immobiliser take some mA), I start without problems after 2 months. A trickel charger is without doubts a good thing, but the need of them is sometimes bit overvalued.
