Thinking about it, the later 4/4 I have now has all the function s on twist switches Wich could cause a lot of problems. Looking at mine on my car this morning I think it would be unwise to try it has to be all plastic moulding I would say, heating it and moving it will end up with nothing working I think. Different with my 1993 Plus 8 it was the old Triumph metal arms which I had to bend to fit.

It looks as if it is a post '91 Disco then?

Being able to heat and bend will depend on the polymer that are made from, thermoplastic can be remelted and reshaped or softened and manipulated but thermoset polymer cannot. If it is a thermoplastic my guess would be ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) which has a softening point of 105 degrees c, but the cable within is probably insulated with PVC and can only withstand temps of upto 85 deg c, so if applying heat would be prudent to remove cables from the stalks and as you said some sacrificial parts to practice on is a must. I would think there are plenty of parts available on line to practice on as plenty of old discos on the scrap heap. Good luck and would be interested to know how you get on. Would think also that the material used would be on all models regardless of year.

A 1991 Disco had Montego stalks, quite different.

A photo might help Paul. I've only driven one ARP4 and cannot remember what the stalks looked like.

Paul, as promised here is the photo of the spare I have. I would say that will be difficult to bend.

Thanks John, I think you are right, it will probably break first. Shame, still I will keep a look out for some s/h stalks if they are cheap and play around with them.
