Steering dampers have been around for a long time, and can be used on Morgan with steering boxes to reduce wobble.
A steering damper can also be fitted to Morgans with a steering rack to improve feel. This came about because my Roadster with Mulfab bearings has very light steering, almost nervous. In conversation with Keith at BHM, he recommended adding a steering damper and said that it improves the feel. My Roadster has never suffered wobble, so I guess I've been lucky.

The rack attachment uses a replacement centre bracket. Here's the original.

This is the replacement.

First I removed the trackrods. The fasteners are 19mm with locking tabs. Nyloc nuts to the rear.

The next image shows the damper test fitted. I later discovered that the Allen bolt has to go through from the front, which meant that I had to part dismantle this to get it in place.

Here's the problem......there is insufficient clearance through the over-rider bracket. The over-rider bracket was introduced in 2002, and changed in '2006' when the angle of the track rods changed. So there may be enough clearance on the later brackets.
But these brackets are 2005, and were opened up by the dealer when later stub axles were fitted by the first owner.

So the bracket had to come off, for modification, which means splitting the track rod end. This is before.......

After, and a clean. I used a hacksaw for the two vertical cuts, and drilled holes across the bottom, before filing it flat. This was quite intensive as this metal is hard.

It's quite fiddly replacing this bracket.

This is the other end with the U bolt bracket which locates on the lower cross tube. Clearance through the over-rider bracket is good. The damper doesn't move vertically with the suspension..... both ends are effectively fixed to the chassis.........

Continued......................

For the position of the outer bracket I measured the damper length fully extended and fully compressed and added half the difference to the compressed length...............

That took a leisurely five hours. thumbs

Oh and I had to slightly modify my jacking beam to clear this new bracket!!!

I like it. Also satisfies a "GOMOG" concern, replacing the track rod plate with one a bit sturdier. This would be a good item for You to add to Your other items that You sell.

Do I understand right? You fit the "mulfab" for lighter steering - after fitment it was too light, nearly nervous.

To cure it you now fit a damper?

Overdone?

I read your book and look what's to do for make my Mog more "practical", but now I wonder about the ideas around the front suspension and steering.

May be it's about my bad english.

Very informative as always Dave. Please let us know the differences the damper makes to the steering and handling of your car.

My Roadster was originally fitted with steering damper blades, which were discontinued around 2006.
The steering with damper blades was sluggish.
When I replaced the kingpins I fitted Mulfab steering bearings which made a huge difference. The steering is now very light without power assistance.
But the Roadster, especially with wire wheels has a lot of offset, and this presents as sensitive feedback. The steering damper doesn't make the steering heavier, it just damps out sensitivity from the road surface. It's from a Mercedes.

The Plus 4 and 4/4 are not so sensitive as the wheel offset is much less.
