I understand these sentiments but there are many cases where 30mph seems too low, for example when there are two junctions half a mile apart along a country road. Most people would let their speed drift up and slow again at the next hazard. But plod has slapped a 30 limit along the whole stretch.. in this circumstance I would feel pretty hard done by if someone didn't warn me that there was a cash collection going on.

There is an added complication in France - some motorists do flash to warn of speed traps (or sometimes random breath tests). But quite often they flash at Morgans just to say "Nice car".
Of course the speed limit on normal roads was reduced last year to 80 kph - though I understand that a couple of Departments declined to go along with this - and one did change their limit - from 90 kph to 100 kph!

I`m afraid that I would not flash to warn other road users - the old sign used to be to tug at the back of your collar to warn that you may have your collar felt. However, I think that I am the odd one out here, in that I approve of speed cameras as speed limits generally are there for a reason and anyone caught exceeding these limits have only themselves to blame. We all make mistakes from time to time - but surely we should be mature enough to hold up our hands and admit fault - even if it is that of not being vigilant enough to spot a speed-limit sign. I have had several close calls as a driver and pedestrian with drivers who think that the rules of the road only apply to others and not them. I enjoy driving fast and pushing the limits of my Mog - but do it on a track or sprint taster day - expensive- yes - but probably cheaper than a fine or living with the guilt of having damaged someone. I was told when I learned to drive that a truly skilled driver is one who knows and adheres to the rules of the road and have held to that principle for the last fifty years or so, priding myself on a full, clean licence.
I await the subsequent abuse! Couldn't agree more.

I always remember a comment from a Police Motorcycle Instructor.
Flashing headlights or turn signals only mean one thing for certain.

Assuming of course that I'm a sensible distance behind them.

Phil I am with you on this but am biased as I coordinate speedwatch for my village and am out monitoring speed each week. The majority of incidents from Motorists are positive and great support from pedestrians! Like your good self I push my mog within speed limits and enjoy this. Use track days as well. I will not apologise for my views as I believe monitoring speed within legal limits saves lives.

If I'm stuck behind someone in the outside lane of the motorway and they are hogging the outside lane at 68mph, would my flash be interpreted as letting them know I'm there or intimidating them? Assuming of course that I'm a sensible distance behind them. How intimidating can you look?

A motorist flashed a Car on the outside lane on the M56 as it moved in they shot past it only it was an unmarked police car!
They were prosecuted for careless driving for being aggressive.
So be careful who you flash your lights at .
