This thread amply answer my question as to what has happened to the traditional way that fellow motorists helped each other avoid entrapment. More piety here than ever enters our local church! Now now, lets not bring religion into it else we could all exceed the limit.

It’s okay Howard, I’m not perfect either! There is a situation where I will willingly exceed the speed limit and I often wish others would too. If I’m overtaking on the open road, I’ll do it as quickly as is safe and with no regard to the limit. This also applies to dual carriage ways, I’ll speed past a slower car and then resume my cruise in the left hand lane. Sitting in the overtaking lane, hanging alongside the other guy isn’t as safe as getting out of his way, you’re blocking his choice to move across should there be a pothole or debis. More often than not, I’ve seen the same pencil neck driver block a chap from overtaking a slow vehicle or prevent him from moving over for a vehicle entering from the left sliproads.

Had a very non pious drive out today, flashed my lights a few times at oncoming vehicles after their greeting of course took my hand off the wheel at one point to wave at an oncoming Triumph Herald. Beeped the horn a couple of times as some skateboarders gave us the thumbs up. I waved a few bikers past at a 60 limit the pillion gave me a biker wave and i stopped the car to leave an old lady out of the car park entrance when there was clearly enough room to get a double decker through. Does this make me a bad person or do i really care.

More piety here than ever enters our local church! I agree with that statement but probably not in the way you think.

We were passed on a quiet M18 yesterday by a blue Fiesta RS who appeared to be maxing out in lane 3. We were probably around an indicated 75 and he came past like we were parked up with a lot of noise. That deserves an immediate ban of three to five years I reckon. There I've wasted my 17,000th post........ or maybe not.

A slightly different view of a speed camera van. A while back, whilst out in my Integrale enjoying let's call it a spirited potter along a sporting and twisty road I came round a particularly fun corner and realised that the white Transit type vehicle parked in the layby on the exit of the corner was indeed a camera van with its back doors and ominous black window pointing towards me. This was a bit of a surprise and did cause me a moment's apprehension followed by a degree of depression. This depression wasn't so much at being caught being a naughty boy more that when I came out of that corner I had the Integrale at that lovely point where most of the grip is in use, it's gently moving around just a little, it's in the power band, on full boost and I was still only doing about an indicated 55mph and don't think I could have got round that corner any quicker without it being on a track and with some nice run off areas. That road had a 60 limit. Just what did I have to do to get a speeding ticket from that van? Of course the crew may well have been on doughnut eating duties at the time.
I suspect there may be some in this thread who consider this to be irresponsible behaviour...they're probably right! Damn good fun though.

Anyone 'maxing out' on the M18 has my complete sympathy. Why they built a 3 lane road to nowhere I cannot imagine. It's like the twilight zone but with no-one to notice that there's no one there.
