As a 3.7l Roadster owner who enjoys one or two track days per year I am becoming increasingly concerned of potential engine damage caused by oil starvation as a result of enthusiastic cornering. Apparently the sump is quite shallow and oil capacity limited leaving the uptake strainer vulnerable to lubricant starvation when the oil slops up the sides of the sump during long hard cornering. The factory are well aware of this problem and have had cars back for investigation. Their recommendation to mitigate this problem is to over fill the engin by 2/3 of a litre of good quality oil....... not sure I am comfortable with that. Is the max make on the dip stick just for decoration? The alternative advice is to dry sump the engine. ....... I can't justify that at 3.5K for the basic kit, plus add ons and labour. Has anyone on TM fitted a larger sump with baffles to overcome this issue or in fact heard of or fitted alternative solutions. A new engine is circa 12.5k, I think I might cry if this happens to me.

I wonder if Simon of sifab on here knows anything about a fix for this ? Good luck, it sounds an expensive fix with the dry sump arrangement.

Suggest you look at the Accusump. They,ve been in use for about 30 years. I had one in the RS 2000 I used in the 1987 Safari Rally.

I don't have a solution, but I do know that an employee of the Morgan subsidiary in Stuttgart ruined a 3.7 machine on the race track in exactly this way. Your concern is justified.

I second the suggestion for an Accusump or similar accumulator. As well as protecting against oil starvation during hard cornering it can be plumbed through a solenoid valve wired into the ignition switch. Switching on the key for a few seconds before starting pre-oils the engine to mitigate a major cause of engine wear, the cold start.

It’s not really my place to make comments as I’ve moved on from Morgan now to a more sophisticated car....but why on earth didn’t the factory thoroughly test the car knowing full well that a number of owners will track them? Every model they build there seems to be glitches that customers discover rather than the factory. As they move to the new models, more expensive and looking to compete with the well known established sports car manufacturers, they seriously need to up the ante.

I take it that the 3.7 engine sump that’s in the Mog is different to when that engine is used in the Mustang, Ginetta G60, Lincoln and Radical?

I suspect Radical or Ginetta simply dry sump the engine. I would say that someone like Sifab or Northampton Motorsports could put baffles in and an oil scraper in to minimise surge and maximise scavenge. Adding extra oil might keep the feed up but it also increases the chances of crank splash and oil getting sucked around the crank - costing power and further reducing the oil in the sump.

Yes you are right, just looked online, the Ginetta was dry sumped Bloody complicated looking at the photos of the engine

Is the problem exacerbated as Morgan had to reduce the depth of the sump to retain ground clearance? Is a baffled sump option available?
